slings affect on FAL barrel

I have read several folks here refer to the sling attachment to the FAL's barrel as having an effect on the gun's accruacy.

I just bought an Eagle Industries 3-point sling and am curious what effect it will have on accuracy.

Does the sling being mounted to the barrel like it is (stock) effect barrel harmonics? Does it 'pull' the barrel when the barrel heats up?

I have an STG with a Steyr hammerforged barrel on it.

Thanks.

THE EFFECT OF SLINGS ON LOCATION OF BULLET IMPACT - 101

A sling attached to the barrel on any rifle will "pull" the shot in the direction in which the sling tension is applied.

The degree to which the shot is pulled, will depend on the amount of tension applied to the sling.

Even if no tension is applied on the sling, the mere fact that a sling (or even the sling swivel) is attached to the barrel may change the point of impact of the shot by comparison to the point of impact when nothing is attached to the barrel.

The only shooting I do on a regular basis that requires the use of a sling for SUPPORT, is competitive highpower rifle competition. For that I use an AR15, with a sling attached to the float tube. I've tried slings with "unfloated" AR's while shooting at highpower rifle targets. At 100 yards I can pull an unfloated AR barrel enough to move point of impact a couple inches at 100 yards.

I'm not crapping on the idea of using a sling. I'm only addressing your question - which was "what happens when a sling is used?"

With consistent tension, you can use a sling tied to the barrel with good success. But, your zero will be changed then when you try to use the rifle without the sling.

For "tactical" shooting, whatever effect a sling has on a point-of-impact zero is probably of no importance, as the success of such events is way more dependent on the pucker factor than whether you exerted 3 MOA shift on the rifle's point of impact by using a tight sling. Moreover, in such situations, you will be far better served by finding a rigid support (like a barrricade) than trying to freehand it with just a sling. Find some cover! Use IT for support. Don't just stand out there in the open.

Except for competitive shooting, I find the sling to be most important as a carry strap. My favorite sling for carrying the rifle is the Viking Tactical sling http://store.vikingtactics.com/merch...Category_Code=

I use a Brownell's Competitor Plus leather sling for highpower rifle competition.

Since the sling loop is attached directly to the barrel it does adversely
affect POI. The same issue arises on an FAL when the OEM bipod is
deployed.

You just need to know your zero on all three.

I know off a bipod My STG shoots 6" higher @ 100yds than when using a sling
And when using the sling it tends to also shoot about 4 moa to the left

When shooting off a rest it shoots same windage but only 4" high at 100yds

Plug that into a spreadsheet if you're shooting multiple flavors of milsurp ammo.
