"NONcorrosive Chinese 7.62x39mm ammo will be headstamp dated about 83 or later and packaged in commercial 20rd boxes. You will not find any "true AP" rounds unless you find API (Armor Piercing Incendiary Rounds) these will have a black/red painted tip.
Some report harder cores in some ball ammo..but that is just manufacturing variation on the steel cores. Unpainted tip ball is all mild steel and made to save money because many TONS of steel are cheaper than many TONS of lead. It is all intended to be Ball ammo. |

Wish I could find a few API rounds for Moses's battlerifle shoot next month!
![]() When I visited my cousin in Rhodesia in 1977, he gave me a few rounds of blacktip 7.62X39, which I loaded into my 30/06. These things sailed through honest 1/2 inch armor plate falling plates (stolen from the SADF shooting range) with a big flash, and left a cherry red glowing hole where they went through. Regular ball and hunting ammo did not even leave a mark. |

Apologies for hijacking the thread. I found a "galvanized" spam can of 7.62 ammo. The previous owner had placed a label on it that read " Chi-Com 7.62x39 on stripper clips". Any ideas on what this is without opening the can, or how many rounds might be in it?

Chinese API will be black tip not black/red.
I'm getting ready to crack a can of it open in the next few days....I'll take some pics of it when I do...
