ive got a valmet m-76 wood stock in ex condition, bought it back in the middle 80s maybe a thousand rds thru it at the most.thought about selling it to fund a new para fal . mags are so expensive for the valmet and parts you cant find. do i keep it as my safe queen cause i know the value will just keep going up or do i sell it for something i can enjoy. i paid about 750 dollars for it and know it is worth more than that . help me out guys what to do?

Valmets...............I love em.
I currently have three or four left from my hoarding days. They are one of the best AK's built....period. Barrels were typically made by Sako. Mine are all quite accurate. A model 76 wood stock in .223 was the most common Valmet imported. A total of about 15,000 Valmets of all models were imported. Wood stock models are great shooters, and frequently go for $1200 - $1400. Tube stock models are more rare. Model 76's in 7.62x39mm are extremely rare with only ~ 50 imported. (I own 2 of them). Mags are NOT a problem.....email me for details if you like. You can modify Bulgarian .223 synthetic mags to work in your Valmet. DO NOT USE GALIL mags in your .223 Valmet. I would hold onto it. Questions - how many mags do you have? Accessories? box? manual?

I'd keep it.
Valmets are wonderful rifles, the Cadillac of AK's, however, they can be a tough sell to the "unwashed masses", some of whom can't imagine a $1000+ AK. (Yes Otis, I mean you). They may sit on a trade board for awhile before selling. Too high of a starting price, and they'll sit for months on the auction sites. *If* you're going to sell, your best bet would be to find a Valmet fanatic. B.Wood's site used to be the place for Valmet fans. Now that its gone, they've moved to www.valmet.org. I'd post it on their trader. I'd keep the Valmet, though.

I'd keep it, considering what you have in it and what it would cost to replace it.

If you need help modifying mags....or finding mags...drop me a line at valmetshooter@aol.com
Valmets can be amazing guns. They literally built too high of a quality gun for the average military unit.....which is exactly why the Finnish army bought Chinese and east german aks for reserve units....the Valmets and Sakos were too expensive at a time when Finland had over 20% unemployment. good luck!

You can still get a current production FAL. The Valmet isn't as replaceable. Keep it.

I SO regret selling my M76W back in the mid-90s. Bought it in pristine condition with 2 mags for $749 in and sold it on a whim to fund another gun acquisition which was not nearly as satisfying. I say keep it no matter what.

Here's mine...
Got it NIB unfired off gunbroker about three years ago for just under $1100 shipped. Took a wild flyer on an auction at $1050.00, didn't meet reserve, got an email from the seller (a gunshop in AZ) asking if I wanted it at my highest bid.

i got some pics of the rifle but cant post. nice rifle pitbulloflove. have you fired it yet or is it still new?i notice the trigger pull isnt as tight as my stg58 is this normal for a valmet and it sends brass 20 ft across the range when fired.ejects so hard it crushes the side of the case.

When I saw my first pictures of a Valmet with that tube stock, I thought that had to be about the ugliest rifle in history. Then I was lucky enough to see Tony Rumore's collection before he sold it all off. The one that was the "coolest" to me was the tube stock 7.62 NATO version. I couldn't believe how solid that stock locked open. And it actually felt fine when shouldered.
If I could afford one, I would own one! Gregg |

Snake, I know this goes against the grain but I would sell that rifle. I am a Valmet fan from waaaaaaaaaay back. They are awesome rifles that parts, mags and everything else related are hard to find. A nice DSA FAL Para is worth more now and will be worth even more when the next ban comes. If memory serves correct the factory Valmet mags were $120+ during the ban and FAL mags were $5. The Valmet has also topped out $'s wise due to the parts and mag availability too. Look around, every show I go to has a few for sale and they have a thick coat of dust on them too.

I fell in love with the tube stocked Valmet after watching Robin Williams with one in "Survivors"!
I'd wanted one ever since.

This guy is slicker than whale shit in an ice flow... Come on' now... doesn't he look like something from the road company of Deliverance...? That movie is awesome! Anyone notice the really cool FAL in the gun store? John Goodman was also the guy that was handing out the flyers. Robin Williams also tells his fiance that his gun is a "308 caliber with a ... Folding stock" 308 must have sounded better even though it was actually a 223. |
