SGT 58 barrel scratches in chamber

Guys I bought a kit from DSA a long time ago and had it built into a nice FAL. Its on a DC receiver. The kit looked nearly new but the chamber at 6 o clock has some good scratches in it. The rilfeing is sharp in it and is very accurate. But with them scratches I have to turn the gas way up to get it to extract reliably . They are too deep IMO to polish out. What yall think caused they scratches. A cleaning kit from them Austrians ? Have yall seen this before ? Thanks WarDawg

The cleaning kit didn't do the scratches. It was the jerk using it.

Only souution might be to pull the barrel and polish out the problem on a lathe

Might have been some nut trying to pry a seperated case out. Shame, cause steyr make a nice barrel.
If you can't polish the scratches out enough to work, better grab onto a new barrel before they get too pricey. How about one of them Rem 700 barrels with a nice tight chamber someone was selling a little while ago??

I have to turn the gas way up to get it to extract reliably .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As long as it runs good I would not worry to much about it.

Is the extracted brass showing a bulge or a area where it has expanded into the scratches ?

I have polished a lot of FAL chambers with a piece of 600 wet & dry sand paper with oil and a electric drill with a .50 cal bore brush.

Good luck, Court in FL.

There isn't a bulge with the extracted cases. But the scratches do transfer to the spent case. The rifle has locked up on me before and I have had to knock the heck out of it to get the spent case out with the charging handle. I know the scratches do fight against it extracting like it should. This had to happen while in the Austrian service IMO. Shame. It's been built into a rifle for about 3 1/2 years now. But got shuffled to the back of my safe. Had it out the other day and wipeing her up and thought Id ask. Maybe I will see if Moses can work some magic on her. Thanks WarDawg

Maybe opening up the gas port a little will make it function more reliably.

Make a little flap wheel sort of thing that can fit in your chamber. Use some 400 grit paper or abrasive and polish it gently. Sometimes just removeing the sharp edges on a defect like that is enough to allow proper operation. I had a Colt Series 70 that was incrediably unreliable - lots of stove piping. I finally found a divot in the top of the chamber from the previous owners attempt to polish the feed ramp. He did that part okay but was oblivious to the tip of the tool which was busy trying to wear a hole through the chamber from the inside out. I used a fine grit craytex wheel and just smoothed off the sharp edges and the pistol has been pisser reliable since - and the divot is still there.
