STG aluminum handguard inserts
This should be a (bad) pic of the handguard template and inserts from my STG. A roll of the Al++ flashing is around $7.00 at Home Deathspot. About 30 minutes or so to figure out the first rough template.

Hey LA -
Looks like a great idea, but I'm kinda dense at times. What are you doing w/ these inserts? Fabricating customs, beefing up originals, what?!! Tell me quick as I gotta know! Live free - GCF

LAFAL: What tools did you use for cutting and punching the holes?
Thanks ... GCF: These are to use as heat shields. |

Yeah. After 2-3 mags of RAPID fire (we call it "feeeeed teeeest!). They are barely warm to the touch. The inserts are cut slightly oversized at top and bottom so when they fit into the lip curl they spring back and mould into the curve of the handguards. The holes you just have to drill slowly with a metal cutting burr in a dremel. Go slow so it don't run away and chew them up. I can't get any clearer of a pic with my cheap digital camera. Wish I'd thought to let RBL take the pics when we did my rifle.

How about several layers of duct tape? Inside or outside on the hand guards. Sorry, I could not resist when I saw the "Handyman Coil" alumnium. Seriously, you do great work. Really nice job of fitting there.

Lafal,
You may want to try some spray foam in the inside of the HG, then apply the aluminum insert while the foam is still sticky. I have been thinking of doing the same with my metal HGs... ------------------ DEO VINDICE! http://www.geocities.com/dixieboy1969/FNAssnLA.html Check out FNAssnLA
