So I'm thinking I need to add a 5.45x39 AK to the collection. I wasn't going to do it initially 'cause I didn't want to stock another caliber, but the lure of cheap ammo has gotten the better of me.
Problem is, I don't really have a good idea what's available in this caliber besides the WASR2. The WASR would probably be fine assuming I could find one that was put together straight. If other options exist, however, I would be willing to spend an extra couple hundred dollars for something that was maybe a bit nicer and maybe not such a crap-shoot when it comes to quality/functionality. Anyway, I was hoping y'all might be able to offer some recommendations? |

I should probably add that, at this point, I'm not interested in building one myself. The economics don't really work out if you're just doing one rifle. Plus, I've gone through enough FUBAR'd do-it-yourself projects in the past to know I don't have the skills or the patience to pull it off.

If it be aristocratic in organization, then it seeks to protect the man who is superior only in law against the man who is superior in fact; if it be democratic, then it seeks to protect the man who is inferior in every way against both. One of its primary functions is to regiment men by force, to make them as much alike as possible and as dependent upon one another as possible, to search out and combat originality among them. All it can see in an original idea is potential change, and hence an invasion of its prerogatives. The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And even if he is not romantic personally he is very apt to spread discontent among those who are. -H.L. Mencken 1919 ![]() Were not that lucky. |

I have 2 of the SAR2's and I like them very much.
They each needed a little simple work to make them take the cheep mags, but they run 100%. Back when I bought them (2000) they where around $240.00 each from Aim Surplus. I am VERY happy with these little rifles. Court in FL. |

I've three. Two Romanian MkII's and a Arsenal 105A1. For function all shoot as well as the other. But the Arsenal looks better and has the 74 flash hider on it. The Romanians are less expensive (around $300) and the Bulgarian cost me $600. I just wanted a nice 74 that looked Russian.

My SAR2 is 2.5" vs Bulgy 74 at 2", rest of the difference is evil features and style points. If you are in it for cheap steel core ammo, just hand pick the Romy for straight sights, side rail and mag fit.

Thanks y'all!
I think my working plan is to check out the WASR2 my FFL guy has in stock. If it's straight and the mag fit is reasonable, then I'll probably grab it and put the savings toward more ammo. If not, then I'll look into ordering a Bulgy 74 from ORF or a maybe Tantal from Lancaster. |
