6.8 range report update
Just a little update: I changed the scope on my 6.8 AR, so I had to sight it in again. At this point I am using the following loads; 23.5 grains of AA1680 with Sierra 115 grain BTHP in Hornady small primer cases and Remington large primers cases. Subjective test seem to indicate that the small primer is more accurate, but I haven't gotten farther into it. Based on my loads for the 7.92x33, I worked up a load with N120. It is definitely hotter, and if anyone tries this, work up to it. My loads with N120 for the 7.92x33 are smaller than with AA!680; the power curve is different.
All the loads so far are accurate, and I am going to try them at 200 yards in the next week or so. I live in a CS state, so we have almost no long-range sites, and most of them are private clubs.

What are you getting for velocities? I'm only getting about 100 fps increase in velocity when I change from 16" bbl to 24" bbl.
I've only tried Hodgen H4198 and H335. Right now, I really like the 16" bbl and Sierra 110 grain Spitzers. The 24" bbl doesn't seem to be worth the extra weight. I'm working with the 115 grain Match Kings and will give them a try at 200 yards in the next week or so. |

I don't have a chrono (I guess I should get one), but I estimate about 2500; no over-pressure signs or pushed primers. Accuracy is VG with the set up I am using, will be trying at 200 yards soon. I'm using ball powder because of ease of loading, but one of the VV powders should be good, too.

I bought both a ballistic program for my computer, and a chronograph when I started loading fifteen years ago. I figured that they would be a reasonable substitute for experience as I had no one to act as a mentor. They both turned out to be good investments.
I'm getting 2570 fps (five shot average) shooting the 115 grain MKs from the 24" bbl, using 28.7 grains of H335. I'm getting 2440 fps (five shot average) shooting the 110 grain Spitzers from the 16" bbl using 25.0 grains of H4198. I like the 110 grain Spitzer and the H4198 loading. The jury is still out on the 115 grain MKs. I'm going to do some more range work. This should be a good load. |
