Norrell's Moly
I refinished an R1 and some miscellaneous pieces this weekend with Norrell's European Olive Drab moly. I'm EXTREMEMLY happy with the results. The OD is very dark green, darker than HK green. I'm hoping Gerald's furniture is the same color.
I started by cleaning the parked parts (about 70% finish..it was a nice kit) in hot soapy water. Scrubbing with a rag and toothbrush. I then heated them to 200 degrees to get some remaining oil to the surface. After that I wiped them with mineral spirits. Once they were clean, I warmed the parts to 125 degrees and sprayed the parts. I bought one of those cheapie $5 airbrushes (really just a propellant, straw, and glass jar). It worked pretty well. It's tough to control the flow..well, basically you can't control the flow. I made sure to use several light coats, reheating to 125 between dustings. I'd shoot, when it got cool to the touch I'd stick it back in the open oven and grab another part. I hung the barreled receiver and lower from the oven rack, and did baked the small parts on a cookie sheet at 300 degrees. Expect to spend an entire day doing it, and the smell is kinda bad while it bakes. Attached is a pic of an extra new Tapco lower that I shot. BTW, I'm selling this OD moly'ed lower for $50 +shipping. It's VERY nicely coated. The pics don't do it justice. I would have pics of my newly assembled and coated rifle, but work would not be pleased with me carrying that in for a photo shoot. take care, Tec |

Nice review - well thought out, details, facts. I only wish there were more pictures (but I understand why there are not
)

Tec9, How much for the Norrell's Moly...? What size does it come in..? Did it all get used up on one rifle...? Thanks for any info, I have ran out of Black GunKote and would like to keep some of this stuff around.

The Moly was $45/quart shipped, and you should be able to do about 6 FAL-sized guns with a quart, from my experience.
take care, TEc |
