Thumbs up Black Ice Coatings

I want to give a big thumbs-up to Lee Mecham at Black Ice Coatings (http://www.blackicecoatings.com).

I wanted to have the bolt/bolt carrier on my AR15 coated with something slick to make it easier to clean, but didn't want to pony up the $130 for NP3 (plus I didn't like the color). I contacted Lee about getting the B/BC coated in black teflon. Communication was instant, and $30 (including return shipping!) and one week turn-around later, I had my B/BC in my hands--but just barely. The finish is so slick it feels like it's going to squirt out of your hands. I wish my digital camera had not shit the bed, as this finish is flawlessly applied. (Check out the photos on his website, esp the .50BMG for a good picture of the coating.) Superior workmanship. First impression when I replaced the B/BC back into the weapon: you can actually feel the difference when you pull back the charging handle, and hear it as well. I immediately grabbed a couple hundred rounds of dirty Wolf ammo to test everything out. No malfunctions of any kind, as expected, but the real test came when I pulled the B/BC back out to clean. No wear showing anywhere, and the black just slid off onto the rag. Clean-up was a snap, even on the bolt-face.

Next thing I did was ship 2 FAL B/BC's (one para, one sand-cut inch) out to Lee. $60 and another one-week turn, and I have two more "slick as owl-shit" B/BC's that slide in easily and clean-up quickly (hey, that sounds vaguely obscene).

Flawless workmanship, fast turn-around, more-than-fair price. He'll get more business from me.

Is this a surface coating or a penetrating treatment like the Black-T from Birdsong? Thanks.

I'm not sure. I have a weapon Black-T'd, and they feel very similar, but you'd have to ask Lee. They're very responsive to e-mail.
