broomhandle ammo
7.62 X 25 Tok. ammo is too hot, it most likely will break your bolt. .30 Mauser ammo is what the gun is designed to shoot. Check Midwayusa.

Do NOT use the Tokarev ammo. It is too hot. Best bet to save your broomie is Fiocchi. Mild, clean and accurate. I doubt if you will be shooting it a lot, but there are a lot of moving parts in there that were hand-fitted and a bitch to replace properly. HTH.

Portuguese FNM 7,63 is also quite good and definately not too hot (milder than original load but cycles the gun well).

I had my 96 bareel relined by Redman's. He did a nice job on it. I [picked up a few boxes of FNM while it was still cheap, and it's fairly accurate, or at least I am. The problem with it is it doesn't always cycle the bolt. The 7.63 was the hottest cartridge of it's day. You need a firm grip so that the recoil forces go into the bolt, and not get absorbed by your arm. The FNM may be a little weak. There was an article in SGN a few weeks back on firing the 96. It had some reloading data. The dies are out there, you just have to look. Work up your loads accordingly. Check the firing pin retainer and make sure it isn't cracked. There are new replacements available. If that fails the bolt comes straight back and keeps going.
But once they're up and running, it's a fun piece to shoot.
