.308 S. African 140rnd Battle Pack prices

We have a dealer price range of $90-$100 per pack now. They all have said that it's going even higher, and soon. I have seen that it is an on going increase everywhere over the last 8-10 months. So, is their $90-$100 per pack the common going rate everywhere or is this range a bit high? It's scary to think that the good old days were just last year. Higher wholesale prices, hazmat, and shipping costs all at the same time makes squeezing off a round a little tougher. Is there any way to get .308 ammo cheaper without making it yourself or buying a simi trailer full? Any info would be helpful. Thanks...BRAD

$90 range is the going rate at AR15.com. today for Port and SA.
Not just a few ads either. Most ads are for FTF to keep shipping from being added to an already inflated price.
And it is selling. Get yours while you can.

Not trying to troll but the last time I bought a sealed battlepack it was 200 rounds and paid $70 for it. Ammo prices are getting ridiculus and as of the past few months I've been investing in reloading because of this. But without ammo a guns basically nothing more than a club.

I do not shoot ANY of my SA or other quality surplus ammunition. I exhausted the last of my OFV recently and have appx 200 rounds of Malaysian 308. Once that is gone I am shooting only handloads. Same thing for my 223 I am shooting no sealed BP ammo. It is for those break glass in case of emergency moments.

At the moment and for the immediate future it is going to be rimfire and handloads.

With the current prices I have been thinking of selling some of my 308. I have 2 STG48 parts kits to build and an M1A but the temtation is there to pay off some bills.

they were just selling two weeks ago on AIM surplus for $49.95 ea. How could they have doubled in 2 weeks? I have roughly 30 or so SA battlepacks. Anyone paying $100 each drop me a note and we'll figure out the shipping. That's just crazy.

I'm in a similar situation (got a bit more than 4 cases tho).

As for needle point, my problem is that I have a new kitchen ($$$) to pay for!

SA and Port 7.62x51mm NATO sells at 60 cents per faster than I can list it to sell....and 5.56x45mm ain't far behind at 40 cents per!

I list it by the "battle pack" and as soon as it shows up on the site, I get an email or a phone call wanting all I have....and I have to cancel my auctions.

Here's an example of SA 5.56x45mm pricing.....

...a little "Port" for your POODLE,...

...and some 63 cent per round "caviar" for the "Poodle Shooter Connoisseurs" in the crowd!

So,...7.62x51 NATO?....Yow!

Sink Me.

I paid $70 each for a couple of 140 rnd SA battlepacks of 7.62x51 on Saturday at the WAC show in Puyallup, WA. With that and a 500 rnd can of .223 I had my hands full, but now wishing I'd gone back for more. Probably too much to hope for that it won't be any more expensive at the next show...

Was back in February that I happened across a guy w/ some Port battle packs. Had $60 listed on em. Grabbed em up. Next month guy had some Pindad for $70 a BP. Only been 4 months and the price of Port is going for double. Oh the days of $125 cases of Port.

I pick up all of the ammo products that I sell on the various auction sites at the gun shows. The people at the shows have always priced items at least six months behind the auction site price curve.

No offense but the prices you've shown seem to be way high compared to what I've seen in the last couple weeks. Sixty cents for surplus, unreal when you can buy new winchester 147 fmj for that by the 1000. Glad you're making money but those aren't the going rates for educated individuals.

Thank you.

No offense taken. I consider it a compliment.

The original poster in this thread ask about market conditions for .308. The point I was making about prices for certain calibers (.308 and .223) and types of ammunition (Mil-Spec) is that the prices are climbing steeply. That rise has been close to vertical in recent months. It is impossible to see a "set" price in this market. Daily pricing on what the market will bear is in full effect.

There seems to be no end in sight.

Thoughts,...

In recent weeks the ammunition identical to the ammo I have sold (and re-sold) in various venues has been offered here on the FAL Files in Marketplace . It is commonly offered for less than what the "open" (auction or retail store) market will bear. At times the sellers of that have been told they are asking too much for their ammo. At times they have been told their price is very fair.

Case in point,...

The M855 "caviar" mentioned above as sold on Gunbroker for $565, was offered here on the FAL Files for $410 by FAL GRUNT. No takers. Not much response. I bought the ammo from him. I knew the FAL Files was not the market for that ammo. I knew the (ahem) "children of the corn" on AR.15 would not pay what was required. So, off to Gunbroker to see what the retail market (auction) would bear.

I could have sold ten more cases of that Lake City m855 to my Gunbroker auction winner. I also had emails from bidders asking if I had more or "like type" available. That one case of ammo, at admittedly "top end" prices, generated ten times that amount in sales of other "similar" Lake City 5.56 and .308 that I had not had time to offer as of yet.

There seems to be no end in sight.

My opinion on "venues" and pricing,..

1) If someone has the time/ability/desire to "grow" (load) his own tomatoes, he can eat cheaply.

2) If someone will take the time to go out in the field and "pick" (Gun Show) his own tomatoes, he will save money.

3) If someone has the time/desire to search around to get his tomatoes at the "farmers market" (internet), he will do fairly well.

4) If someone goes to the "retail market" (Gun Shop) because he wants to just get the tomatoes and does not want not to screw around sending money orders and waiting for the UPS delivery man, he will pay much more.

In conclusion,....

I think none of this has anything to do with the buyer's level of "education" in general, or about his education of the various market prices. In my opinion has more to do with the other issues of life that effect all marketplaces. Time, desire, effort, trust, ability to pay, and sometimes just the oldest of all "variables",...They just don't want to be SEEN in that particular "market".

Public figures, doctors, businessmen, teachers, judges, lawyers, scientists, and other so called by the "public" as professional or "educated",..at a GUN SHOW?

Not many my friends, and NOT the majority.

PS,...Again, thanks for the compliment.

Wolfsburgbob just a point of interjection. The price of milsurp is ridiculus. I'm starting to see it go for more than the American made stuff you can get at most stores. But apparently there is a market for it or the price wouldn't continue to go up. Got me off my duff and started me into reloading. Now I'm not looking at milsurp but at reloading components. Whan I reload costs less and my rounds are more consistent than any mass produced rounds could hope to be. Within a year of me buying my press it will have paid for itself and my rounds are more accurate even with milsurp components. Several others have done likewise.

Good points. GOOD points.

I agree with you on "home rolled". Mine are as good as any factory and better than some. With a pair of Dillons and a Giraud trimmer "at the ready",..I'm covered.

Having ole Pat McDonald only miles away has never hurt either.

I reload for all my revolvers and bolt action/ single shot rifles. It absolutely pays for itself. For my semi auto and full auto rifles I use mil surplus and bulk purchased new ammo because I hate picking up brass so for my short range and SHTF rifles. Don't have any pistols so those aren't a problem.

+1 on the picking up of brass for short range semi or full auto weapons. I hate it too. When I feel a need to be very careful or when the ground is wet I will use a large plastic tarp to collect the drippings. Otherwise its a hand-job.

Gotta do,..what ya gotta do.

PS,..a "brass catcher" on MY rifles?....NEVER!

The Marketplace rate for SA battlepacks shot up $20+ in the last couple of days. Sunday night was the first time I saw SA advertised here for $75 a pack.

At this point I'm buying 70's Indian when I can find it, and nothing else, with an eye on reloading equipment when I can eventually afford it.
