Bolt/Carrier/Recvr interference on Para build

Let's see if someone else has had this problem before. I'm converting to a Para, and when I replace the carrier, I get an interference problem when the bolt is closing forward. Just as the bolt crosses the areaof the receiver where the pivot and locking shoulder are, it's too "tight" and binds to a stop.

The picture here is with one brand of Para carrier, so I tried another companies and it is a little better but still does the same thing. With the original carrier, it has just enough space but not with either replacement.

I can relieve some in the top of the carrier at the front lip, but hesitate to do anything without asking questions first. Has anyone else experienced this when changing carriers?

Does it bind with the top cover off?

I have one top cover that's tight!

Try installing it with the receiver upside down to see if it will work. I have to install my para carrier upside down, it does something similar. It does not bind at all when fired.

common

Heck. I tought that condition was normal. I just lift the front portion of the bolt with my fingertip when sliding assembly forward.

It is normal.

toolbocks;

You have to fully extend the bolt when inserting it into the receiver rails and roll the rifle to the side or upside down, until the bolt face clears the hammer slot.

When the carrier and bolt are removed together, you'll notice the bolt when extended, will hang/drop down by it's own weight. When inserted into the receiver this way, there is no floor support when sliding over the hammer slot, thus it drops down and catches the lip.

I think we're all thinking the same. It does not make a difference w/ cover on or not.

I do know it has to move forward with the bolt partially extended out of carrier, and still no avail. I have tried lifting it with my finger, holding upside down, jiggle, shake, etc.

With the original carrier, it just barely clears. With the replacement, it's just shy of clearing such that I can start to "force" it and it binds.

So, beyond all that, any ideas? Some one tell me where to put the dremel

I almost want to "sand" the spot to give it clearance, but I know that would affect the locking shoulder area - and that's bad. I'd be more inclined to leave the bolt alone and remove a hair of material from the top of the carrier.

I have to give my Para "the finger" to get it back together. If you must break out the dremel tool.........start with the cheapest to replace part.
BTW: Who is the manufacturer of the carrier/top cover/receiver?

Will the carrier silde back and forth with the topcover on without the bolt in it? That would eliminate the carrier binding to the topcover (unless the bolt just wedges it enough, but it shouldn't)

Is it a DSA carrier? I find a LOT of them oversize all the way around. Lots of snading, dykem, sand some more.

In answer to some of your questions, the top cover has nothing to do with it. This problem arose even before I put a top cover on it.

The first carrier was Falcon Arms, and it would also bind further up right before it closed without the bolt in it. It looked rough, had been filed on, and was sold to me as "new" so I got peeved and sent it back to them last week for replacement.

The next try was with a DSA carrier, my back-ordered lower just came in. Slightly better, but still same. It will however close completely when I remove the bolt.

Receiver is new DSA type II.

I believe just a litle relief to the inside top of the carrier at the front edge would do it, and I don't think that area is even touching the bolt when it is closed, so it would not be detrimental to operation. It looks odd to me that the top middle of the carriers are all machined, yet they don't carry it all the way to the front edge.

So.....?

Gunplumber-

Question is, should I:
A. Send back carriers, they are defective
B. Releive slightly the upper inside front of the carrier to allow the bolt to just clear
C. There's another answer, that I don't know of

Rich-

I can machine down those contact points if you know that's the solution. My bolt sticks forward the "correct" amount per your second picture, my picture is after I've "forced" it forwards until it jams with a couple fingers worth of "push".

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm sure I'm not the first and I'd rather learn from others mistakes.

Follow-Up

Falcon sent me a replacement carrier. This one has been machined inside all the way to the leading edge, and even beveled slightly. It works like a charm, and looks much better than the first one (this one actually looks new). No binding at all, so I'm happy.
