18 round magazine for MAS 49/56?

I was just wondering if anyone has actually seen one of the 18 round magazines that were supposedly made for the MAS 49/56......

saw one once, guy at the range had a MAS 49/56 MSE with 2 of them.

guy was busting clays at 200 yards, original scope

nicest rifle i've seen in awhile.

those mags are like hens teeth, good luck finding one.

heres a pic of one of the 35 rounders for those interested.

I've seen the ones that are converted from FAL 20 round mags. But I didn't realize there were any factory extended ones.

Kelt, who is a French rifle expert (in France) and posts on the Gunboards French Firearms forum, says the 18 rounders were prototypes only, are still held in reserve in France, and that he has never seen one for sale to civilians. And he should know if anyone would.

probably FAL's, but I think the rifle itself also has to modified a bit to work with those mags.

Why wouldnt adding the metal or err another mag to the bottom weld up with a mig machine assemble and have a good to go hi-cap mag for that rifle? hell 25-30 rounds out of that gun seems resonable to me and since its straight not curved i see no reason for it not to work. Am i wrong on this note???

The French 7.5x54 cartridge was originally designed for the MAT-24/29 LMG. This LMG used top-feeding 25-round box magazines. These magazines can be converted for use with the MAS-49, 49/56 rifles, much like the 7.62x51 Bren magazines can be used with an L1A1.

You need a "donor" 10-round MAS 49 magazine from which you will remove the mag catch for transplant onto the MAT-24/29 magazine. IIRC, you also have to machine/file a small bit on the mag rib for clearance.

Do a search on the Gunboards.com "French Firearms Forum" and/or Parallax Bill's similar fourm for specific info on how to do the conversion.
