FN Patrol Bolt actions
Anyone have one ?? How do they shoot ?? Worth getting ??
I'm not much of a bolt action guy, but I thought I'd give one a try. How do they compare with the remington 700s |

I was looking at them this morning in the CDNN catalog that just came in the mail.
From the picture, it looks like a standard contour barrel. Their heavy barreled, "1 moa or less guaranteed", rifles sell for hundreds of dollars more. IIRC, the ad sez that they use Win 70 actions. That kind of surprised me. Would have thought that they would use their own proprietary action..

So has anyone got one ?? Are they worth getting ?? I don't want to spring a bunch of money for junk. I don't know that much about bolt actions, always been a semi auto military style shooter. Thought I'd give something new a try.
Should I just get a remington 700? |

I have a Savage 110FP. I'll tell you, they are as good as any Remmy or Winchester out there. If you're looking for an outstanding rifle with the "modularity" of being able to change the barrel with a wrench, this is the rifle. All the money you save can go into a good scope and aftermarket stock. I love mine. Of course this is just my $.02. I did a good bit of research before I took the plunge. Like you, I am really a lover of semi military types. It's just cool to have a longer range capability.
Jim This is a pic of it that I got from the guy who traded it to me. I have a different scope on it now. But my total investment here is about $500 |

I think the long barrel version has the classic old Model 70 controlled feed action, and the short barrel job has the newer push-feed or maybe the "controlled push-feed" action. That accounts for the price difference.
And unless you just want one of those, yeah, the Savage will work fine. Our department has a 10 FP, I did put a Dura-maxx stock on it, but it was shooting OK with the factory one. Did get one more round in the magazine of the B&C, though, and I just liked the feel better. |

The other price difference is the Hogue overmolded rubber stock of the PBR vs. the McMillan tactical stocks ($$$) on the SPR.
Once upon a time I had a very early FN SPR. Back then (the first gen.) had the same HS Precision stocks as the Remington Police (Varmint Specials, etc). They were less pricey than the current one's with the McMillans. I wish I had never sold that rifle. It was a tack driver. I was at my dealer's today and he has a very lightly used PBR for $700. I'm thinking I'm going to pick it up from him when I get some coinage together. The reviews I've seen of the PBR all show less than 1" @ 100yds. One review had a best group of .4??" (can't remember the exact size but it was less than a half inch w/ PMC match ammo). DK

I have a fairly early production FN-SPR with the McMillen stock,it's a very nice rifle.for hundreds less you can get into one of the "tactical" Savages and also have a very nice rifle. The FN-PBR I know little about,I do believe that it uses a post 1964 type winchester action while the FN-SPR uses a pre 1964 type action with the claw extractor.the Savages seem like a great deal and I really do not think that the target would know the difference.

I got an SPR 24" A1 stock. I am almost postive the main differences
are the Bolt, Stock and the Barrel. I can tell you that out of the box this is one of the most accurate rifles I've owned. Why settle for second best. It will nail a dime at 100yds all day. |

If they're going for $700, I'd just spend the few extra and go w/ the SPR. I got mine (2nd gen, McMillan stock, NIB) for $1000 off gunbroker last year. I believe the seller was Tannersports, they always seem to be a few hundred less than other dealers. I initially thought maybe factory seconds, but mine will shoot 3/8" w/ Hornady 168 grain A-Max. I can't wait to start reloading. + they come w/ a NEAR mfg scope base ($195).

This review made me have a serious case of the "gotta have it's." And Tannersports was selling one on gunbroker in this configuration for a very good price. If I actually had the money....
