Backpack with rifle scabbard
Here is a pretty neat backpack for 'on-foot' bugout. Probably won't dish out the $200 any time soon, but I might try to modify a North Face pack I have.

that seems rather bizarre. Place the rifle in the most uncomfortable and inaccessible place possible.
I usually just used a pair of short cargo straps to strap extra longarms to the side of my Alice pack. Snug, secure, and accessible if you need the weapon. For 'on-foot' bugout, my rifle WILL be in my hands. 1gewehr

I have used this extensively. Very comfortable and easy to adjust to a number of backpacks.- http://www.kifaru.net/MGgunber.htm

Great pack and the perfect setup for a second rifle. Carrying a carbine and packing the long range gun. Military snipers are using them and they are getting rave reviews.

Strangely the best pack I've found for carrying a rifle in/attached to the pack is actually a climbing/skiing pack.
It has slots under the side pockets for skis/ tent poles etc. Sticking a saddle scabbard into one of the slots leaves the "Maraudered" Marlin's stock just sticking above the shoulder. By grabbing the stock just behind the lever it can be drawn and loaded in a split second if needed. The change from a saddle scabbard to a sleeve style scabbard increased the security and ease of carrying immensely.
