Gun Safe / GoldenRod
How well does the GoldenRod remove moisture? Would it work in a humid garage? Thanks for all comments! SB

I had one in my safe before I built a vault and it seemed to work. I understand that it doesn't REMOVE moisture, it only heats the bottom to keep air moving so condensation doesn't form. Supposedly a 15 watt lightbulb will do the same trick.

I've used one here in Alabama for two years now. Using an 18" GR in a 60 (yeah right) gun safe in the garage. No issues that I've seen.

Use one in a 14 gunsafe and a 60 Watt bulb in the closet that the safe is in for 3 years. I live in Eureka, CA; the coast: salt & humidity. I have found no rust yet.

I think the way the goldenrod works is that it heats to 140 degrees and slightly warms the air in the safe. I don't think it actually removes any moisture, but increasing the air temperature decreases the relative humidity and makes condensation unlikely.
I also keep 3 containers of dessicant in my safe. They have to be "recharged" about once a month (3 hours in the oven). These things seem to work. The relative humidity in my safe is always around 34%. |
