Can you shorten a Steyr hammer forged barrel??

This is a ?? from a guy at the gunshow from today.
He has a couple stgs built up and he wants to shorten the barrel to like 18" or so,but was told that you cannot cut down a hammer forged steyr barrel because it will destroy the accuracy of the barrel or cause the barrel to lose some property of the steel and basically ruins it.
Have any of you smitthies cut down a hammer forged Steyr barrel with a lathe and run into any functional or accuracy issues??

Thanks!

Never heard anything like that before.
I've only cut one Styer FAL barrel, to a 16.5" carbine, but I havent had any issues with it.
I've also cut, threaded and installed a break on a Styer SSG without issue.

Remington, among other brands, are hammer forged barrels too.
I've cut, adapted to other gun's, re-threaded and re-chambered probably 20 of them without a problem, as have thousands of other people.

You need a hack saw, some sand paper, and a marble.

A tube cutter is also nice to mark the barrel before starting in with the hack saw. The first one I did this way, followed by the hack saw, sand paper, and "finger tip" marble, came out amazingly square.

Chrome lining can present some problems, but Steyr StG-58 barrels are not chromed...

We shorten StG-58 barrels (on a lathe) to 'carbine' length quite often at the shop...

No problems...

And I can't believe that your friend ran into a moron spouting bullshit at a gunshow...

barrel

IIRC, Moses routinely wins the RBGC fal match with his bastardized (ahem.. I mean shortened) StG. You'd think all that floppy hair would get in his way, but no...

Anyway, sounds like mall ninja science to me. I cringe at the thought of cutting a nice steyr barrel, though. They're just scarce anymore.

thanks guys- This guy was supposedly talkting to some guys from Walther and supposedly they are VERY familiar with barrel making and the steyr hammer forging processes. They stated something about the 'grain' of the steel or harmonics of the barrel will be messed up.

I will forward on the results or send him a link. I was going to see if I could somehow chisel the stg's out of him because he said 'kits' and 'never got them built' but then he said he had them built after all.DAMMIT thought maybe I found the 100.00 kit stash........

Well, shortening the barrel will certainly change the barrel harmonics, so the Walther guys are correct about that...

But that's what adjustable sights are for...

Brake

I have the Entreprise "Zero Climb" it seems to work pretty well, they also offer a brake from Smith Enterprises that looks interesting and then there is AK concepts they are offering one of theirs for the FAL as well.

Finding they Zero climb and and Smith brake on their site is a little tricky but trust me their there.
