#8 of the Top Ten: M1903 Springfield

I just made a decision to purchase this from a guy I found on AR15.COM. It looks to be a fine example of a M1903 Springfield made by Remington. I was planning on getting an Inland M1 Carbine from CMP in April, but this M1903 showed up and I could not pass on it. The M1 Carbine will have to wait.

This will join my 1943 Garand. Also, I will pick up a G1 on Monday. It was built on an Imbel Gear logo receiver. It will join my DSA SA58 Medium Contour. So many more guns out there and so limited funds.

I have a Remington '03A3 that I used to use to check loads. I would try the load in the '03 and if it shoot well then I knew it was OK. Every load I ever shot well in the "03 would shoot in anything.
If I had one that didn't shoot well in another 30.06 I would test it in the '03. If it shot well I knew it was the gun not the load.
They are remarkable rifles. I love 'em.

Here is a link to the AR15.COM website where the seller originally posted some pics. I tried to post them here, but had a few problems.

So I got to goofing around with mine and am wondering exactly what the on-off switch is for. It does not seem to do anything.

When the '03 rifle was designed, the U.S. Army still saw the magazine as a reserve for cartridges. The soldier or doughboy needed to load ammo one round at a time and only use the magazine when needed or ordered by an officer. The magazine cutoff switch located on the left of the receiver turns the magazine on or off. The magazine cutoff switch when place in the middle position allows for the bolt to be removed from the rifle. With the magazine cutoff switch in the on position, the bolt pulls back far enough to clear the magazine follower and will engage and load a cartridge from the magazine.

With the magazine cutoff switch in the off position, the bolt when pulled back no longer clears the magazine follower and thus will not load a cartridge from the magazine. This allows the shooter to drop cartridges into the path of the bolt, one at a time.

I found this at http://www.surplusrifle.com/1903/operations.asp .

Thanks for the info, and I forgot to remark that your 1903 is a thing of beauty! I am also using your pic to figure out how to put the confounded sling on correctly, LOL.

I spoke with the guy this afternoon about a few things. It turns out that he has three M1903s. He was selling this one to make room in his safe for a new rifle he just bought. He is also a FALFILER. To answer STGThndr's question, he said that the bore is bright and shiny and the muzzle gauges about 2.5. He said it is accurate enough at 100 yards to hit clays all day long. Good enough for me.

I'm the proud owner of a SC 1903A3 and a (ugh) Greek return Mk 1 1903 Springfield. Both are great shooters. I also found a 1917 Eddystone that I have yet to shoot, bore is near mint.
