Son wants an AK!

OK here is the quandary. My son told me he would like to have an AK!
After I got up off of the floor, I started to think about it.

I want him to have a good AK. My gunsmith is one of the best in the industry. But he is backed up for a LONG time! Further, I would like for my son to have an AK that is all "imported" except for the compliance parts. Ergo, a WASR 10. I am not a real big fan of the WASR. That pretty much leaves the pre ban stuff and SAR1s,2s, and 3s. As much as I love my son, I simply cannot afford a preban and I won't let him have my Steyr Maddi.

So the question becomes this. Should I build or buy a SAR1 if I can find one?

Suggestions?

For the 'cool factor' as well as inherent value, I'd check out AIM or a few of the others and get an underfolder. they can be had for typically under 5 bills and really retain their value.

The other issue is that the underfolders have very short stocks. I think that a kid would fit one very well. Plus, his pride of ownership would be astounding. Great PR on the schoolyard against the ones that you see the jihadists waving in the air, if you get my drift.

Great value, great fit, and great PR in a politically incorrect age. A triple play IMHO.

He can bring a bakelite mag to school as well as pics of him shooting it for 'Show and tell"! Priceless.

Don't let him take a mag or pixs to school------------------------you are asking for big trouble. I tell my kids to not talk of their experiences or what we as a family own-----------to much exposure. Wait until they are older------ie 18 yrs before talking freely about their activity.

OOPS, I forgot to mention that he is 25, 6.2 inches tall and weighs 250 lbs or so.

What surprised me is that he has never really shown a keen interest in shooting like the old man. That is why it floored me! He has been to the range several times but very seldom has he asked to go back.

Unfortunately, his wife hates guns. Her reason, they are loud. UH-HUH!

Here he is at a gig. He used to play bass in a band. Note the Swiss Rifle shirt that he got from me!

Well I would have thought that also until we took a family trip to the range. We had 4 boys all in grade school that shot 22s. They were so proud of their targets that the took them home. And to school and told everybody they knew about the range trip! To my surprise when I heard they had taken the targets to school NONE of them got in trouble! Miracles do happen!

do it the right way, get a kit and a flat and the two of you can build it together.

One of its primary functions is to regiment men by force, to make them as much alike as possible and as dependent upon one another as possible, to search out and combat originality among them. All it can see in an original idea is potential change, and hence an invasion of its prerogatives. The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. And even if he is not romantic personally he is very apt to spread discontent among those who are.

I thought that you were talking about someone about 10 years younger! Define your 'target' audience sooner! Ahem.

I still stick by my recommendation.

"Buy now what you don't think that you can buy later" + $$$$

I would suggest an AMD 65 or a 63 for both the cool factor and a collectability of it. Very few made it here.

Arsenal AK with the longer US buttstock.
As good an AK as you are likely to find and a better fit for your "boy".

Ahem, that would be the Valmet. The Galil is a Valmet "clone"....honest....the original 1st run of Galils were built on "sanitized" Valmet receivers.

Thumbs up

I was also thinking your son was a bit younger.
My son is 11 and has his own RRA AR15.
He also shoots my M1A, Garand, AK and the Savage FP10 .223.
Now that I have a FAL, he'll shoot that too.

There's nothing wrong with a WASR 10. I've got two and they both came w/ TAPCO G2 trigger groups. For $289 ea. at Dunhams you can't beat them. If you pay more for an AK it's just for cosmetics.

+1 on the father son build but +2 on two guns for a father/son day at the range for under $600.

Plus you get the integral side mount rail so you can slap some optics on if you want. Romanian side folding stocks are only $40 at AIM. You can't go wrong. You can deck out the WASR 10 with the money you save by not doing the kit/build scenario and you don't have to prove half as much later as to how the gun got built when you've got a sales receipt for a complete rifle.

We used a bunch of WASR-10's, a SAR-1, a Norinco, and a few
WECSOG specials to train the Marine Corps.

Its all good.

Well, it might come down to a WASR. I am not really a big fan of them. WASRs are imported as low cap guns and the monkeys at Century open up the mag well to accept hi caps. Crappy work. No dimples. The SAR1s are very close to the Romanian military guns. IIRC, I read somewhere they are semi automatic military guns. Besides I have read a a lot of people having a lot of trouble with the WASR. I don't think I have ever read about anyone having trouble with a SAR.

OK so I am being anal about it. I just want him to has an AK that is as close to military as possible. He would not care if it is kit gun or not. It's a dad thing.

JerryMRC,
I am doing great. I have improved everyday since I was so sick. I have had a Nuclear stress test and a colonoscopy. The old ticker is fine as is the plumbing. Still have one more thing to do then hopefully, I can take a break from doctors. I have been to the the doctor at lest once every two weeks since I got out of the hospital in December. Thanks for the thoughts!

The absolute best preban is the Steyr Maddi! They were built on Russian equipment in Egypt so they are the closest thing to a Russian AK we will ever see.

I have a wood stocked Rifle in 308, AK design receiver but mag only holds 8 in .308
I have seen 16" Saigas in 7.62 x 39, really nicely made, not sure about mag capacity though, very inexpensive
Another of my choices might be the Robinson Arms Vepr, another nice AK Variant.

But Geez, all show outta stock, must be in high demand.
Might be some dealers who have some?

I've worked with 2 WASR's...one old one,a nd one of the newer GP ones.
The older one seems rougher than the newer one, but both go bang every time, and the GP WASR is actually about as accurate as any .30-30 levergun I've shot.
The price savings alone will let you buy more mags and ammo, and any stocks you want to put on it to dress it up.

I'll have to measure a couple to check.

I think some of the WASRs may be hit or miss, dependant upon which angry beaver is doing the work that day.

Another thing to think about - does he want a -47 or a -74?

I had Coyote Gulch Armory build me a Bulgarian 74 sidefolder (AKS-74?). I love the 5.45 round, and it is currently available. That's a joy to shoot.

Having said that, I also have a Arsenal milled 47 with side optic rail. Probably one of the nicer AKs out there, but it is not cheap. Machining, fit and finish is top notch.

I'm not sure on what kind of kits are out there, but you may want to try to find a AK-74 kit and a Global 5.45 receiver. That makes a pretty good AK.

Get a Vector. I actually worked there part time for a while, (unfortuantely not on the AK project). And the guys building the AKs are amazing! The base model AK is in the $500 range and they do they're best to keep the kits in they're original configuration, they are definately not cobb jobs.
