First build
First post here. Just want to introduce myself and have a question..
My username here is the same as the one I use on Glock Talk where I've been a member for five years. I've bought an Imbel parts kit on gunbroker and I have a DSA Type 1 Receiver on order. Hope it gets here soon. My question is what is the best type of liquid-metal or similar product to use as a metal filler on my FAL? I'm thinking of filling in the A selector position on the lower receiver. I also had an "oops" on the front site where I nicked the metal. I've seen the Alvin product Lab-Metal but that's a lot of product just to fix a few cosmetic problems. Any suggestions? |

utahIrishman, welcome to the files. First off let me just say that ive been to GLOCK TALK and asked a couple of questions concerning my two new glocks. All i got was smart ass answers and they were probably from punk ass kids. wheew, now that being said, this is a great site to ask all questions. Just wondering why do you want to fill it in, its the way its supposed to be thats character. are you trying to make a show piece ?

eh...Glock Talk is a mixed bag. Thanks for the welcome.
Perhaps I'm being paranoid about the A position. That's mostly a thought. I would like to fix the ding I put in the front site though, and I don't think grinding it out will do the trick. |

It must be a pretty bad ding or you are just like me and want it perfect. I can understand that. did it throw off your sight ? have you fired it since then. if its still on then i would just consider it a battle wound and move on. Or even better just build another one. Yep thats what i would do. Cant have too many

The ding isn't on the sight itself but the base. Yea...I'm being a perfectionist. The ding certainly won't hurt the functionality of either the sight or the weapon.
Can't fire it yet. Still building it, err tearing apart actually, and haven't gotten the receiver yet. On order from DSA...waiting anxiously for it. Still a lot of cleanup to do on what I have. |

A good epoxy should be enough to do what you want. Limit the travel of the selector so the detent doesn't travel into the repair.

Actually you will be limited to a paint surface whether you use JB Weld or common epoxy to fill in both the "A" and the full-auto detent, OR if you use any kind of welder to fill in those things with metal. The act of welding will change the heat-treat of those spots, which will show up like a neon sign when you try to park the lower.
I can understand your trepidation given some recent experiences by certain Board members. Don't forget to limit the selector movement so it won't even get into the "automatic" area (this will help keep stupid LEOs happy) by using an Inch selector, a special Metric "semi-auto" selector, or replacing the pistol grip with a version that does not have the auto-selector cutout. --Radio

Welcome to the files. I had a small ding in mine and I smoothed it out with a stone and refinished it. You can not really see it.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll check into the semi-only selector.
I'm planning on using a dura-coat finish, Grey Wolf and Matte Black, so if regular metal epoxy will work I'll go that route. I've thought about parkerizing, but I'm already over budget so...I'm thinking hard about the parkerizing. I figure it would be well worth it in the long run, but had planned on doing the whole project myself. I'm not ready to tackle doing my own parkerizing on my first project. I'll let you know as things unfold. Still cleaning things and dis-assembling a few parts at this stage. Taking my time. I think this is going to be a cool project. |
