Any way to modify inch flash hider to fit metric bbl?
Can anyone think of a way to modify an inch pattern/L1A1 flash hider to fit a metric barrel with LH threads?
I posted this question a while back and just thought I'd bring it up again to see if one of you machinists out there might have a new idea. Thanks, Flyer |

RH thread your barrel over the LH threads.

Why not use a browning (long) FH? It doesn't look that much different than the inch FH and threads right on (no pun intended)

I would like a long Browning flash hider w a bayo lug but they are hard to find and very expensive, plus the bayonets even harder to find.
This may sound goofy but what I'm trying to do is make my Imbel FAL look as much like an L1A1 as possible. So I am trying to add some inch pattern features such as the mag release, extended safety lever, long flash hider, inch bayonet and SUIT. All the mods would be "bolt on" so to speak, so I can convert the gun back to 100% metric config if I so choose. I thought about re-threading the flash hider to fit the metric barrel instead of altering the threads on the barrel. So that way if it does not work out I have not damaged my beloved Imbel barrel. Perhaps re-threading the flash hider and installing it with some Loc-tite would work out. Any other ideas? Cheers, Flyer |

+1 for Elbo. I've done just that. Rethreaded over left hand threads with a right hand die. Piece of cake and it works! Of course I was silver soldering mine on but I don't see why it wouldn't work for non-silver soldered FH's.

Does re-threading the barrel work better due to the harder steel alloy compared to the steel used in the flash hiders?
I guess if I re-thread the barrel the only down side is that I'm commited to using RH thread muzzel devices from then on. I'm warming up to the re-thread the barrel concept........ Flyer |

With patience I re-threaded and "timed" a Browning long flash hider to left hand threads. Then the bastard banana peeled after several hundred rounds. Use an L1A1 flash hider.

Yes, I guess it's prob best to experiment with the flash hider as opposed to the barrel. That was my initial plan anyway.
Especially in my case since it's a nearly pristine chrome lined Imbel that has shot at least one 1.5 MOA group in it's time with me. Although most of the time I get about 2 MOA. Are the L1A1 flash hiders known to be more resistant to peeling than the Browning examples? 3 slot better than 5 slot? Thanks, EMSFlyer |

3 slot came about after rare but occasional splitting. I have heard of it but never seen it.
My 5 slot incher has at least 7,500 rounds through it since 1991, and maybe a lot more before i got it (ex-Brit rifle). I don't worry about it.

I re-threaded my LH metric barrel for RH muzzle device and it would except both until I silver soldered it on. If you have a thread die make sure you have a TAT (thread alignment Tool) It screws into the die and goes down the barrel to keep the die going on straight.

Remember, Time Heals All Wounds. And takes your memory, too.
At some point five years from now you'll decide to swap out that flashhider for something else. Then, if you had changed the barrel threads waaaay back in 2007, Fate will dictate that you will forget which way the damn thing screws on and wind up tightening the goobers out of it while attempting to unscrew it. Change the threads of the flashhider, not that barrel. Besides, this falls right in line with the First Gunsmithin' Rule, Always Grind On The Cheapest Part. --Radio

If you want an L1A1 flash hider that was modified to a slip on configuration email me and for the mere cost of postage I will send it to you. I just pulled it off a rifle I readed for. No threads in it , they were removed. Slip it over your barrel and clamp it down.
