Bead-Abrasive Blasting Question.......
Any of you who bead blast alot or work at places that do have any intimate knowledge of blasting media called "Black Slag" grit???
I usually always use Alumn. Oxide grit but was wondering if this would do the same on firearms for refinish work??? It looks like a black version of Oxide grit with a abrasive look to it and is cheap at the home center but the bag didn't say anything about metal working with it. Would this work at least as well?? thanks!

Around here, we have stuff that they call "black Beauty". I believe it is a by-product of coal fired power stations and may be the stuff you are talking about. It is very course and puts some serious craters in metal. To aggressive for firearms if you ask me but great for industrial purposes that will get painted.

definitely WEAR a respirator with that stuff.
It works great for rusted stuff but is way aggressive for firearms, That and there are tons more nasty things for you to inhale. I us aluminum oxide in the 70-75 grit as it cuts well and leaves a nice tooth |

I tried the crushed slag products and they do work very well. However, like the other posters said: They are too aggressive for firearms unless you want a coarse finish. We now use a Dupont product called Star Blast. It does a good job and is not to aggressive. Keep yer powder dry, Mac.
