Ok here's my problem, I want a short action left handed mauser type action. The only games in town are are Dakota arms and montana rifles, both big $.
So I'm looking at a winchester 70 classic, left hand in 270 WSM and started wondering, can materials, extractors be modified on a magnum size bolt to fit a standard bolt face (i.e. 308)? Safely of course. Or am I looking at mucho dinero and might as well just get a dakota action? Thanks, Worldskipper Last edited by worldskipper; January 08, 2007 at 16:50. |

I believe 270 WSM and 308 are both short actions, you can get a bolt from a 308 and install it. With changing a barrel also, you might be better off to look at a weatherby vanguard or remington 700. Great rifles, though i must admit, i would probably build the model 70 also, as i prefer them (no push feed vs CRF arguments intended or implied!)
The Win has a much better safety, a nice narrow feel to it, and a super simple to adjust trigger. Look for SOMEONE to buy the rights to the model 70 and start producing them, or a carbon copy rifle, and soon. No way a design that popular and strong is going to simply dissapear. I am in need of a long action 70 receiver and bolt hehe-if you find a good distributor, let me know! Azure |

See the problem is I don't think I can swap a standard bolt out with a mag because it's left hand. And they don't make a left hand, short action bolt....
grrr very frustrating. |

I thought the WSM series is based on a .404 Jeffery case head, basically same size as a .375H&H. A gunsmith could weld up the magnum boltface and remachine to a .308 boltface, and refit the extractor..

I know, a guy can wish can't he.
You would think that after, oh I don't know 100 years, somebody other than the gold plated boys at Dakota would make a controlled round feed short left hand action! Look, all I want is a stainless, left hand 358 winchester with CRF, with a 22" 1:12 twist barrel, a laminated stock, Iron sights, and a QR S&B flash dot scope. I tell you what, any politician that could promise me a gun like that would be available at wally world, I'd vote for him, twice. What's sad, is unless ruger or one of the big boys steps up, my dream bolt won't happen until I marry my girls off.

you could write letters to your congressman, if that would make you feel better.
However, on the bright side, perhaps you are starring at an investment opportunity?? Start your own business?? Southpaw Arms?? Lefty CRF actions, Lefty 1911s, Lefty AK's, Lefty Fal's... go for it.. |

You might try contacting FNH-USA, they own the now deceased Winchester and the new FN - PBR series of rifles is built on a long front receiver ringed Model 70 action.
If they make a left hand PBR, you might just convince them to sell you a bolt. Other than that, the weld and grind solution is gonna be about your only choice.
