G3 Clone build or buy???
Hi All
So as of late I have been thinking that I would like to have a H&K91/G3 Clone. I mean I all ready have mags, collapable stock, cleaning kit and a scope with mount (on the way) Question is should I build it or just buy it and be done with it? Build it and I will have to find a good receiver ($600. I saw a FMP one for) Parts kit ($400 from IO if they still have them) Compliance parts (who knows on this one) Then a good Smith to put it all togather (Unknown at this time) So just from what I can tell I am looking at least $1000. for a recever parts kit and compliance parts depending on what is avalibel. If I just get in line and buy. I can get a PTR 91 for around $1000. I should think. I have seen a couple go for $900. On the files here. Or I could hold out for another $500. or so and maybe get a Springfield Sar 3/8 (which one is to be prefered?) Or possbly one of the FMP ones. Or do I just dig in deep and hold out for the real deal? This will be a gun I shoot not just a safe queen. What do y'all think? Old Sarge

I did a build on a PRT receiver and it cost me just about what a PRT would.

The hardest part about G3 builds is all the tig welding. If you have a tig and some welding skills or access to someone does, the rest is pretty straight forward.
I'm going in deep on a couple of G3 builds, one kit build on a JLD and a cheap CETME on a Hesse. I'm pretty sure BigMac is going to skip on his build and send it out to IGF and have them assemble his kit build. There's also a really nice SAR-3 on the Marketplace right now.

While I have built a lot of G3 clones, with the current availablity of parts, if you can buy an A prefix PTR 91 in the $1000 range, it makes more sense to me than building one - from a cost/benefit perspective.
if there is something special you want done,or a configuration other than JLD offers, then a B prefix / custom build is in order.

There is a nice Springfield SAR3/8 in the marketplace.I would consider the SAR a factory rifle and not a clone or kit gun.If you have the funds on hand that would be the best choice in my opinion.

As nice as the PTR-91 is, I'd still pick a facotry FMP or EBO gun first if the cost was pretty close.

That SAR3/8 overstamp is a nice deal for $1300. As already mentioned, this rifle is a factory rifle. Built in Greece on Hk machinary and Hk licensed. I recently picked up a SAR-3. Recently compared to a factory HK-91. The SAR-3 was a cleaner rifle (application of welds, fit and finish). Needless to say, I am very pleased with it.
