Coonan receivers
OK. This has probably been covered before but the posts are several years old.How good/bad are the Coonan receivers say compared to DSA and Imbel? I have seen them from time to time on gunbroker.com and was just wondering......

They ain't worth their weight in dog crap. If you run onto one, send it to me. I will dispose of it safely and won't charge you anything. I will even pay shipping and transfer deals.
Howzzat, Mucho Hot Rat ? ![]() Seriously, some say they are the best. I am waiting on my first DCI. BTDT with Imbels and Centurys. Don't get me started on how good Centurys are. Folks of my opinion are in the minority here.

They're nice receivers. Unfortunately, they haven't been available for several years, so you're not likely to find any reviews more current than what you've already found. I wouldn't take one over an Argy or Imbel(or probably DSA even), but I'd take one over anything else. They are cast, not that that's a bad thing, but still lower down the ladder than any forged receiver IMHO. If/when they become available again I will be buying them.

I just picked up two of the new production ones today. They look real nice better than the Imbel one I built on before. I have no DSA to compare to. I got on the list for updates that Harlan started when it was first announced that Coonan would be making another run of the receivers after FAC matters were finalized. Now I just have to figure out which kits I want to use to complete them with.

Thanks, guys. Where did you buy your Coonans? DCI site seems to indicate they are in production and not available.

I've built two Coonans. Good receivers, but not up to DSA, FMAP, or Imbel, in my opinion. There are a few dimensional differences from the original Herstal type 1s which annoyed me a bit but didn't seem to hurt function. Finish is acceptable, not bad but not as good as I would have preferredThe first one had some sharp edges and the bho hole was a tad too small ( yep, tried several bhos ), the second was fine and an easy build. If they were available I wouldn't hesitate to use one, but for a really primo kit I'd go for a DSA or other milspec receiver. MHO, YMMV

I just built one of the new batch over the holidays (serial # < 50). Absolutely no issues other than it headspaced on a brand new Izzy HB (not DSA) at the smallest I've ever encountered, .252. There are a few casting marks but nothing too bad.

I just built an Imbel with a "new" Coonan receiver . Harlan seems to be filling orders from a year or so ago first. I had ordered from Harlan while he was with FAC.
Thanks Harlan!!! The receiver is as good or better than the old one. Best build - It went right together. No problems I would think that he is catching up and will be putting them on the marketplace soon. Good product and a great fellow to deal with |

I have been tempted in the last few days to email Harlan to ask where I am on the list. I have just gotten an Inch Century upper and planned to put it on the next build in line. However, if I knew I was anywhere close to getting notification from him on a DCI, I would wait for it. Save the inch for a real Inch build.
With all this movement I am seeing, I think I will spare Harlan's inbox the clutter. If I am truly on the list, I will get a note when it is my turn and not a minute sooner or later. , Harlan

I am just below 1000 on the waiting list. I figure many will drop off so I am hopeful that I will get one this year.

I'm # 803 on the list. I PM Harlan back in October and he replied that they should be contacting me sometime this year. He would not be any more specific
than sometime in 2007. He let it be known that he was going to fill the back-orders from the FAC days first, and then would e-mail you when a receiver became available.

Hope springs eternal! I thought I might have been dropped somehow. But if the list is truly this long, I may be contacted still!

Marsh Hawk Arms on gunbroker had 10 of them for sale. I got one; I think they're all sold out or he hasn't got a new auction up yet.
Might want to contact him.

My FFL made contact with Harlan last week, dealer price is $250 for the DCI/Coonan Type 1. There are over 1000 on the waiting list. They are about to release a batch of 200 or so to those on the waiting list. They have no plans for mass production. My FFL has done builds on the DCI and considers them quite good. Sounds like they'll be worth the wait.
I saw 4 of the Marsh Hawk DCI type 1's on Gunbroker, starting bid was $340, all were purchased using Buy It Now for $360 after a day or two. I was not expecting them to last that long. I passed on them as I already have a Imbel kit built on an Imbel gear logo, but I have another Imbel kit from Dan's. I'm in no hurry, I will hold out until I can get one in the door for under $300. |

I haven't built a FAL in quite a while, but between ones I did for myself and for others, I think I've built close to 30 of them. The ones that were least likely to give me any problems were the Coonans. Even DSA was more difficult on a few builds. Imbels often drove me nuts. I'd take a Coonan any day if you can find one.

If Harlan reads this then know this;
I'D RATHER HAVE IT RIGHT THAN HAVE IT FAST. And thanks for having them at all.... steve

Last weekend I picked up my 2 from a group buy put together way back in the day. I haven't built them up yet, but from on the eyball gauge they appear to have a nicer finish, and fewer toolmarks than the old Coonans from the FAC days.

I agree with you Voided37. I just wish it could happen sooner. I have my eyes on a excellent grade G1 kit that needs a good receiver. From everything I have read on the Files, they will be worth the wait.

I bought 3 from Marsh Hawk for $340 a piece shipped. I little more than I'd like to pay but the prices have only been going up so I decided to just get it over with.
