Brownell's Whiting

Someone on the board said they were going to use Brownell's Whiting on his stock.

Have you "been there done that" yet. If you have, how did you like the whiting?

Lightly scrape the wood all over to open it up and soak it in laquer thinner for one week. It will pull most everything out of the wood. I get 5 gallon cans of laquer thinner for $20 at auto paint shop.

I think that if you can just get the oil and grease out it will function and feel fine. one you start sanding then must fo the distance with refinishing. A nice project but alot of work.

that might have been me...I've used whiting a couple of times now to pull cosmoline/oil out of wood stocks. You mix the whiting with acetone, and make a paste...coat one side of the stock, and then I stick it in the car with the windows rolled up. After 3 or 4 hours, you can see the whiting turn that nasty green cosmoline color where it's pulling it out.

Brush off the mix, then recoat as needed. You can get a boatload of oil out in a pretty short time.

BTW, the whiting is listed as calcium carbonate, which you may be able to get at a chemical supply place, if you don't want to order it from Brownell's. My guess is that it would be cheaper if you did it that way, although the dealer cost at Brownell's for a 3lb jug is only $8 and change.
