"Empire" by Orso Scott Card

has anyone read this. i saw it in the bookstore the other day and it looks like a very relevant SHTF postulation.

Can't say about Empire but didn't he write "Ender's Game"? If I am thinking right he did and thats one hell of a peice of military science fiction. I'll have to give empire a look-see.......

Card is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (Mormon). Check out his The Folk of The Fringe, it is another post SHTF scenario, from a LDS perspective.
He's one of the better prolific authors out there, I haven't read Empire yet, but it's on my list now. Ender's Game is classic SF, and one of the better looks at children I've seen. Most of his books are at B&N or Borders, he's a hell of an author.

I dunno - Ender's game was awesome, but some of his later stuff was downright boring.

to tutiifruity.

and when ender's ability became merely a matter of genetic alteration and not well, just raw ability, I was intesnely disappointed.

Same when "the force" became genetic in Star Wars.

Somehow, he's gone from good hard-core military science fiction to "why can't we all just get along " kum - by - ya all cultures are equal BS.

Time to re-read bio of a space tyrant or some more david drake.

Leafed through "Empire" at Border's the other day.
Seemed like a good read and possible option for the U.S. if we keep going down the current path.

Or maybe you could give the Honor Harrington series by David Webber a try.

Lots of space battles and interesting concepts if your into that sort of scifi.

Okay so I like pulse rifles and flechette guns and the thought of long range missle broadsides in my reading, I'm still a 60's kid at heart.

Weber is pretty good,- like david drake, I appreciate him making the laws of physics of his universe and then people having to follow them. It seems to me Card always has some supernatural/miracle event.

I'll second that +1 on Weber, didn't he write "Bolo" ? about intelligent iridium armored aircushion tanks with huge "HELLBORE" cannons capable of orbital ranges from the ground or was that Drake who wrote that...? Both them guys got a work or two of just the kind of blood and guts military sci-fi that gets my interest.

Keith Laumer, invented the bolos, though others have written short stories in the bolo universe.

I still remember that bolo Mk I fighting to the death as the hoards came over the artic.

"Why didn't you run - didn't you know you were the only surviving bolo . .. . what was the point in this suicidal defense . .. . "

As the AI brain faded, the bolo croaked " For the .. . . Honor of the Regiment .. . "

I know, let's abolish the Fed, get out of the u.n. and kick them out of the country, close our borders and deport all illegals, bring every military member back home and close all foreign military bases. Cut ALL tax rates personal and business to 11%, abolish all unconstitutional federal agencies. It'll hurt but it would help us as a country.
