G1 handguard finish...
BBT arrived with the G1 last week. What is the proper finish for the handguards? Is it the silverish park like on the STG HG's? The G1 handguards in the kit are basically in the white with some brown gunk in the recesses. I am planning on deep black/blueing the rifle. I'm not sure if I want the handguards lighter or darker yet. Any info appreciated.

Mine were not salvagable and wound up in the trash. They appear to have been parked and painted black over the park. The barrels show paint under the handguard on the most worn of the three. One barrel was new and painted to the FH and beyond that parked a grey color.
Dark bluing would be about right, I believe. I am going to park one and paint it. The other, on the Williams receiver will be painted to match the receiver.

Bill,
Do you think matte or semi-gloss is the way to go? |

Hi Guys;
Mine came with 100% of the original finish. A few dents but servicable. It looks like matte finish & smooth, like a good park. Even with me hammerin' on them a bit, the finish remains. Definitly NOT paint. I have'nt really seen many to be able to judge but if I had to paint them it would be a matte, & dark Charcoal Grey, almost a blueish. GL......

Sounds like they were blued over parkerizing.

There is a gunsmith in my area who recommends blue over park as a refinish option on many guns. He says that is a very durable and corrosion resistant finish, and looks very nice. I have yet to get one done using his blue over park.

It is possible that painting of the entire gun would make a nice appearance, including the receiver. That might require screwing up the anodized finish on the receiver, which I do not wish to do. I will know what to do when I get it done to my satisfaction.
