Park Tank Questions....

I got my new park tank from "OO" today, (haven't even opened it yet!) and I have a question about a heat source.
I'm planning on building a burner of some sort, using propane and maybe a gas grill regulator. I'm thinking about 1/2" black pipe with holes drilled for the burner holes. My question is has anybody used this setup before? If so to what success? I'm curious about the size of the burner holes or the orifice diameter and spacing to get good even flame/heat. I considered using gas grill burners but the one's I've seen are much too wide or much too short, I've thought about using 2 of the shorter burners but thought that if I could make my own I could apply the saved $$$ to more parts and stuff!
Any WECSOG ideas???

Here, Ill save you some money and countless hours of your time. Buy the three-burner stove from Harbor Freight $29 and dont forget the regulator for $14. They work great. Dont know about you but a day of my time is worth considerably more than $43.

I just went throught the same experience with a tank from "OO". Fantastic tank btw...
I was thinking I needed a more even burner and thought about cutting up an old grill or rigging a gas log burner and after some trials I tried the coleman stove thing. Save yourself the time and go with the Coleman! I have no problems whatsoever!

Hey Medic, how did you convert yours to propane? I am using regular petroleum gas and would love to be able to connect a LP tank.

Hi guys! If you are building a burner, and are using propane, you will need a NO. 54 orifice to regulate the gas input to the burner. I'm not sure how many I have on hand, but I think I have a few. E-mail me your address and I'll send one to you. Also, unless you're content with controling the gas input to the burner with a shut-off valve alone, It would be a good idea to get a regulator. Prevents too much gas input. If the flame is "lifting" off of the burner, It's getting way too much gas. The ones sold for barbeque grills will work fine. Try Menards, Farm & Fleet, Tractor Supply, hardware store, etc. About $10.00 or so. Heating contractors and salvage yards usually have an old gas space heater or two on the scrap pile. The burners in those things make great tank burners! HTH

OO

Edited to change orifice size number from 55 to 54.

Here's a related question.
What is the best material to build a park tank from? Is stainless suitable? I don't want any unexpected chemical reactions. I've been told that pyrex is the best for this, but of course it's only realistic for smaller bits.
Sorry, I know that this has probably been asked to death, but i'm new to the board.

Thanks!

Got your e-mail. I'm getting more metal next week. I'll reply later tonight.

FALphil,

Thanks for the comments and the nudge. I've been meaning to update for a while. You know how everyday life can get in the way! It doesn't help that my wife is a webpage designer who works at home.

medicmike,

I might have a tank for you right now. Looks like a buyer changed his mind. I have not heard from him for over a week. It's a 6X6X35 22 gauge tank. $89.00 shipped. I'll e-mail ASAP.

leftent,

Stainless steel is plenty suitable. A search of the Gunsmithing forum and the archives will answer a lot of your questions. If you still have questions, come back and post. Lot's of helpful folks here. Here's a link to my tank page. It will give you a little info on my tanks, and what I use to build them. http://www.doubleought.com/parkerizingtanks.html
