WTK / Correct way to install Gas Block

Need to know the correct way to install a Gas Block/front sight on FAL Barrel. I DON'T have a press. Thanks

I used a hot air/paint stripper gun . Just heat up the gas block barrel ring . Metal expands and it slides right on ! No pounding . You got to be quick to get it aligned , because it shrinks really quick !

A Propane torch work's for this as well! Just don't mess around and get it cocked/stuck before it cools!

It would seem the correct way to install a gas block would require a press and what you're really asking is 'How do I install a gas block without the proper tools/equipment to do it correctly'.

With that in mind, does heating up the gas block to get it back on have any effect on the gas block itself that could be detrimental?

What IS the proper way to install and remove gas blocks and what are the proper tools used for this?

Jen ,

Yes , I believe the proper way would be to use a press , along with a custom arbor to set the gas block on square .
The barrel I did ,had a journal OD of .692" , and a gasblock ID of .6915" .
You don't need a lot of heat to expand the thin metal of the GB enough for a slip fit .
I prefer this to pressing , because you have enough time to align the GB with the pins .

I did one by first putting the barrel in the freezer and the block in the oven. Then I put the barrel in a set of Gunplumbers barrel blocks and then whacked the gas block on with a sledge hammer and block of wood. Worked really well, that is how I will do it next time.

FWIW! Just a little more Heat and you won't Beat

! You dont have to get it cherry red or even close, to just slide it on! Hold Block with pliars, heat the part that goes around the barrel for like 15-30 seconds and slip it on! After it's on I quickly rotate it(with pliars) until it lines up!

Well that was the best I could do with what I had on hand. The oven is the hottest thing I have. It worked well enough for me. I am sure you are correct in that it would be easier if I had a torch of some sort.

Freeze the barrel.

Boil the Gas Block.

Install.
