Report of strange AR10 problem

A friend has an Armalite AR10.

He reports that he removed the bolt for cleaning, then re-inserted the bolt into the carrier.

He says that he absolutely cannot get the bolt back out. He's blaming the rings, thinking they "expanded" (his words) and won't allow it to be removed.

What do you think?

I think he inserted the bolt into the wrong end of the carrier.

This is a known problem in the early models. The only way to get it out is pull it out and destroy the gas rings in the process. Get a new set of rings and it will be good to go.

The owners manual specifically addresses this and warns to be careful. It seems the owner did not read the manual. Yes, it probably will destroy the gas rings but that is all. They are cheap so the lesson is not too dear.

The owner has a responsiblity to read and adhere to the manual. I really hate to hear the gripping that so often comes from not taking time to read the manual and screwing up the product.

No, at best someone just comes up with a better idiot.

So now I must reveal there may be a simple solution, it has been known to work in some of these cases with the AR10. Just pull hard on the bolt and rotate the carrier in one direction while holding tension against the rings. On occasion, they will slip past the machined edge. Better chance if the ring is the macfarland type rather then the dod type.
