Needed some more Mausers
Here, I bought these 98ks over the Summer in private sale. I'm hold them in reserve for later; clean up and maybe rebarrel. They're good cannons. You need a 98k. If you already have one, you need more.
Front to back: dot44, duv42, and 42/1939. The dot and duv and IO imports from the '90s sometime. They have VZ-24 sight hoods for some reason. The 42/1939 is a 2nd or 3rd-wave Russian capture. Dot is BRNO, duv is Berlin-Lübecker Maschinenfabrik, and 42 is Mauser Oberndorf. The duv is the most interesting, I think. There is still enough matching parts on it to tell what's going on. Early as '42 duv were taking shortcuts. It has the solid band. The receiver has that little step where they deleted some machine work, and they did not polish all the tool marks off the rest of the receiver. There is no provision for a pin in the rear sight leaf, and it's not graduated on the bottom.

I wouldn't do a thing to them.
Some of those old Mausers may look a bit on the ugly side when they're viewed individually, but put a collection of them side by side and the differences in their color and finish causes them to take on an entirely new character. A rack of weathered Mausers has a very artistic quality. Nice photo.

Thanks Temp. I will just let them be then.
8x57 on the left looks serious. That is 179 gr. E. German from 1960. It appears to have a steel jacket with a thin copper plating, and it probably has a steel or iron core. 8x57 is the ancestor of 7.62x51 on the right. In 1903 the Germans were getting velocity approaching 3000 fps from their Gew 98s. Last edited by Mebsuta; October 18, 2006 at 20:56. |

lol,.... well,,.... no Mausers today, but I can't go into that place without indulging my addiction. Today I found another S&W 'I' frame from the late teens/early 20's. It'll be a carry piece with panache'.
This one is chambered in .38 S&W.

I wonder if I could get $300.00 + s & h for a VZ24 with crest in 85% + condition?
(Not sure if I want to sell, just putting it out there. Heh, heh.) But I might be urged to part with my crestless VZ24 in good -very good condition for the right offer like $250.00 shipped conus. Accepting pms from interested parties. Fortis! AZ Myrmidon Last edited by AZMyrmidon; October 14, 2006 at 16:58. |

For new made 98k barrel, there is Lothar-Walther. For NOS in .308, there are the Norwegian barrels from Coles. I don't know of a source for NOS or mint vintage barrels in 8x57. I think you can still get a pretty nice take-off from Numrich, but it won't be new. They are hit or miss though. You might lurk over on Gunboards a little.
By the way, if anyone wants to know about the 98k and what's out there now, this article in Wiki. pretty much nails it, though there are always little exceptions. Whoever wrote it up did a really good job. http://www.tfrwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Karabiner_98k Last edited by Mebsuta; October 15, 2006 at 08:46. |

Mauser
I have a Brazilian mauser 7mm. It looks nice but sure hurts to shoot. I like the 1 on the bottom.

I was reading through that wiki and found it interesting that they mention that the 98k's can still be found in Iraq. I never actually saw a 98k rifle there, but found plenty of ammo marked with the Wermacht eagle.

There are actually some Iraqi cartouched 98ks in the USA. You would see them at gun shows once in a while. It's just a small marking, but they are probably collectable by now and therefore expensive. My guess is that the Iraqi ks were mixed in with all that stuff from Turkey in the early 90s.
My understanding is that Iraq was still holding 98ks in reserve prior to 1st Gulf War. When round two began, there was a helicopter than had been hit or had trouble and had to set down. The Iraqis rushed a TV crew in and shot video of an old farmer in front of it with a 98k, claiming that he had shot it down. Who knows? I'm sure the US was back shortly to destroy the helicopter on the ground. Last edited by Mebsuta; October 15, 2006 at 12:30. |

I sold off a Yugo 98k and a M48A this week, so I took the Russian capture 98k and my 24/47 out yesterday for 80 rounds. The shoulder was hurting after that. The 98 got more accurate the more I shot it.
Makes the .308 guns feel like ARs. I'll take out my Brno 98/22 next time. |

here is a mauser that was given to me from a widow in washington. it was brought back by her husband, he sporterised it but it is all matching numbers. he used it to hunt deer and elk and it sat behind the door. then after he died in 92, she asked a soldier of mine if he knew anyone who liked guns. she was going to give it away or turn it over to the police. so i ended up with it. serial number 8099.
![]() ![]() ![]() then here is my hi power. my great great uncle brought it back Sn 234xx ![]() ![]() thought i would share |

That's yet another reason why the US should be trading with everybody. Mausers out of Syria should be surplused out, brought here, and given good homes, rather than turning up in Iraq where they are used to take pot-shots at our guys.
