range report (STG58C)

Today I hit the range with my still relatively new STG58C. This was the third range trip. On the plus side:

-1980 SA ammo was consistent POI with 1981.

On th negative side:

-the hooded rear sight I installed is apparently way too tall. It is *not* the L1A1 sight, so I don't know what the deal there is. I will have to swap back to the stock one to get back into proper elevation range.

-the bolt was wanting to "stick" to the rear for some reason. I've never seen anything like it. It did not affect function during firing, but did when chambering the first round from a mag. Pulling the cocking handle all the way to the rear and holding it for a second, then releasing it, causes the bolt to stay open. It is not being held back by the BHO, and is further to the rear than the BHO anyway. A smack to the bottom of the pistol grip will cause it to release and the bolt will fly to its closed position. When the receivers are separated, the bolt/carrier will fall out the back from the force of gravity... I don't feel any sort of binding while moving them by hand in the upper. My only theory is that the recoil spring in the stock is binding somehow, but really have no idea. Anyone?

Thanks,

tt

Just to make a correction, I mistyped before... the new rear sight was actually too short.

I also have another theory on the bolt/carrier binding... there is a shiney spot right at the top of the rat tail thing on the back of the carrier, right next to the pivot point. I think this spot might be contacting somewhere on the lower receiver and causing the issue. It pretty much went away when I put a drop of lube right on this spot, and I will investigate further.

Anyone ever seen something like this before?

I took the carrier out and wiped off the spot on the "rat tail" (what is the proper name for this part?) that I thought might be sticking in the lower, but wasn't able to duplicate the issue I observed at the range. There is probably too much lube around in the receiver to really get it dry. I haven't been able to duplicate it since spraying a little CLP on the carrier after cleaning.

Check the charging handle lug. I had a Imbel build that did exactly what you describe. Drove me nuts trying to figure out what was causing the bind when pulling the bolt completely to the rear. Turned out the CH lug had a fat spot on it and it was binding in the charging handle slot. 20 seconds with a file and all was better.

Thanks... how can you check this? Did yours do it only after having fired some rounds through after a cleaning?

I can't remember if the charging handle was sliding freely when the binding was taking place.

or is your front sight too tall?

ttbadboy

Your rear sight may be just fine. You can get shorter front sight posts for your rifle.

DSA has the part you probably need.

they come in four heights one through four dots one is shortest. Look to see what you have installed then get the next shorter sight.
