IMR 4350 @ $11 per LB

A guy in my local area has 11 lbs. of IMR 4350 for sale for 100 bones. But he said it is 20 YRS OLD! It has been stored in his "shed" for all this time. The metal cans show a minor amount of rust on the rims. He said he reloaded some '06 rounds, and they worked fine. Should I leave this stuff alone, or jump on it?

Should be fine.

Can you get the guy to sell you one can, with the understanding that you will buy the rest if the single can is satisfactory?

Sounds more like $9 per pound...

If you don't want it, let us know where it is...

The only issue I ever experienced with old cans of powder was rust IN the powder from the interior of the can's rusting. This was ONE can out of a half dozen I got. Stuff was at least 20 yrs old. When I poured the powder into the measure the rust powder was VERY evident. I trashed it. I have a can of IMR 4895 I am working with right now that I bought back in NC. The price tag reads $10.99 (retail). The exterior of the can looks pretty bad. Powder works good.

I say open a can or two for a look see. At that price you could junk a couple three cans and come out ahead.

I used some pistol powder (HP 38) that was in my grandfather's shed for about 15 years. It went bang, and with good results. Definately check for contamination, though.

OK, I met the guy and got 11 cans of the 4350 and he threw in a can of 4064 to boot. I opened 1 can and it looks great. No signs of rust on the inside.

My next question is should I continue to leave it in the original (sealed) cans, or should I dump them all into something else?

BTW... I got it all for $90

Here is a pic of the rusty cans:

depends how much you load and how fast your going to use it , If you plan on using it to load up 1 batch of ammo mix it up for consistency , If you load 20 -50 rounds at a time leave it in the individial cans as it has been fine there for the past xx years and the consistency can to can wont matter as much
