L1A1 rear sight: having trouble (new kit)`

I just got a Century L1A1 kit. Good news/bad news deal, posted separately. The rear sight has a "button" on the right side, nothing on left. It will not depress and consequently, will not slide/adjust. Am I guessing right that I need to soak that button until it moves? This is my first L1A1.

Best bet is to remove the rear sight assembly from the lower. When doing so be careful not to loose the Z shaped spring on the bottom or the pin that is in the front of the main rail. the pin inserts through the bottom and keeps the sight from slipping off. Soak the whole unit in degreaser, kerosene, mineral spririts os similar product. Let it soak overnight at least, then use the handle of a wooden hammer to lightly tap against the button. If it doens' move, stick it back in the solution and try later. The rear sight you have is an Ishapore 1A type. TAPCO sells them for around 10.00 if you can't get it to function. HTH, Dan.

Some had no button to push. You just push forward to where you want it. Better look close.

Well Duh! As my 6 year old loves to say! it was the painkillers, that's what it was, the painkillers! I've been sitting here looking at all of these different parts and it just hit me, button on the RIGHT. Listen to overdriv, he got it right the first time. Now if you happen to have an Ishapore, like the one I mistakenly identified in the abve post, then those instructions might help. Caught red handed, Dan.

Thanks Dan and Overdriv. After Dan's post, I looked this thing over again and couldn't see it being Ishapore, so didn't do anything. Now I just tried a firm push, and yep, it works. Now for my next post and question. Thanks, Dennis

Dennis, I took mine apart and cleaned the sand and even a small stone out of it. There are 3 small springs and 3 ball bearings so don't lose any ( like I did ). Found new bearings at the hardware store.
