true frankenFAL inside
well, here's my baby 95% done. I wanted a FAL with all the features I liked from the various models. It has the R1 grenade sight (looks cool when highlighted), wood all around (love the grain), and R1 style muzzle break.
It is a Hesse (gasp) receiver and has been parked and coated in OD green Norrels Moly Coat.(the pictures don't do it justice) the barrel was shortened so that it's 16.1" including the break. in other words, short as short can be. The reason it's 95% done is that i managed to cross thread the piston aligner thingie that screws into the receiver. gotta re thread that. I also am in the process of refinishing a HB wood carry handle to complete the outfit. ![]() [ October 17, 2001: Message edited by: Caspian ] |

What's w/ the odd gap between receiver and back of HG?
VERY handsome work, Casppian, VERY! Excellent attention-to-detail on the lettering, too.

My guess would be that since he cross threaded the piece of the gas tube that screws into the receiver, that he left the gas tube assembly out, and just put it together to show off the finish.
Looks cool!! Never seen a GREEN FAL before...I like it!

yep, i had trouble screwing in the gas tube thing, so i figured, maybe there's grit in there. better torque it. doh!!
the finish and lettering was done by a buddy. i have an e-mail sent to him to see if he wants his name posted. i did the wood stock with tintable stain from minwax tinted to "evergreen" or something like that followed up by 3 coats of semigloss polyurthyane. My buddy that refinished it suggested keeping some parts black for some contrast. I liked the total green look. i figured i can always add black parts from my other kit.

Gavin's the man behind the finish. Top rate job. The Norells moly coat in combination with Gavin's application techniques make for a FANTASTIC finish. I've fondled the hell out of it and racked the bolt back 50+ times without signs of wear.
Contact him if you want it done right. |
