Mauser project under way..need info
I have an RC K98 that was pretty thoroughly scrubbed before I got it. The bore was as useless as tits on a..well.. boar. Anyway, I scored a NOS Danish LR Mauser barrel with military contour and chambered in 30-06SPRG.
I made the measurements and made the cuts and now this fine barrel is torqued into place and the headspace is dead on perfect. ( It is so nice to have great tools to work with) I am ging to put the K98 sights back on it. This will be a little tricky since the portion of the barrel where the rear sight sleeve goes it quite a bit thinner than the rear sight sleeve. I will have to make a spacer sleeve. What I need to know is this: Is there a scout type scope mount that is a drop in replacement for the M98 Mauser rear sights?

S&K makes a scope mount that replaces the rear site, try this link, K98 mount is in the right column, 10th down from the top.

The S & Ks have been around forever.
Here is a link to another version. It appears similar to the S & K with a similarly outrageous price tag for what little they really are. Scroll down the page for the mount. GunAccessories.com |

HBR, did you modify the magazine to fit .30-06 ammo, or are you going to hand load ammo and deep seat the bullets?

I have always heard that to do a .30-06 conversion on a 98 the receiver ring needs to be milled with a cut to allow the longer '06 ammo to be loaded. Any problems with loading other than the Korean issue previously noted?

I will probably make a few more mods to the receiver to better accommodate the longer cartridge. I have a gillion Mauser stripper clips and it would be a shame not to be able to preload ammo on them.

good question probably a blind hole.(not into the chamber) i dunno i was just typing without actually walking over to my neighbors to look at his k98 to see if it could be done sorry. if i remember my friend had one of these outfitted with a suhler mount. yeah its an odd ass mount but alot of german gunsmiths outfitted sporting mausers with these back in the day and they are still used on some rifles like the blaser. so its gotta be a european thing i guess kinda like the drillings
