Uuhh...Is this normal?

Hello everyone. FAL newbie here. I have a STG-58 on an Enterprise type 1 receiver. The rifle works well except for one annoying trait. The damned thing pops open occasionally without touching the take down latch! I put a brand new spring kit in her from DSA so I doubt it is the spring. There is still about an 1/8 inch of slack in the latch. If I hit the top of the receiver cover with the heel of my hand in front of the rear site the latch seems to lock up flush without any slack. Do I still need to take more off of the receiver lug? I'm afraid I'll take too much off and ruin it. Any tips, tricks, or advice is much appreciated.

No this is not normal , I bought a FAL several years ago and it would pop open when fired . I ground down the angled plunger a little to get it to engage the reciever better and have no longer have any problems . Remember the WECSOG way always modify the cheapest part .

Not that I am an expert on these things, but I wouldn't be touching he reciever lug at all....I would work on the plunger that locks into that lug...after all if you screw this up it is cheaper..(and easier) to replace than the reciever.

If the rifle is in "spec" there should be a gap between the take down lever and the reciever.

Hope that helps

Andy

Make sure the Cover is seated properly I have just finished building my first Kit and I am not a EXPERT either but the cover was not seated over the Carrier all the way.

You might also want to check to see that the lower receiver plunger spring in installed correctly and the it is working properly. I've built many a FAL and have only experienced your problem when the plunger spring was broken (rusted out). Checking it and cleaning it is kind of a pain as you must take the butt stock off. There is a litter screw on the bottom of the back of the lower, just below the stock spring tube, that you have to take out. There is also a pin you must punch out to allow access to the plunger and spring. It might seem like a confussing painfull thing to do but you will learn the features of your lower very well and my find your problem.
