STG-58 Bipod is supposed to twist more in one direction
I have an STG-58 parts kit, (with imbel upper) that I am planning to send off for
assembly as soon as I get the money for that and the US parts. My problem is that the bipod doesn't seem to twist correctly. Those of you with the Stg-58 kit know the bipod twists a little to the left and right to allow for inconsistancies in the ground you are laying on. The Bipod twists alot to the right, and only a little to the left. I took it apart, and found that the bipod resides on a ridge, or raised ring around the end of the barrel. There is a cutout in the center of this ring that permits the twist. The cutout is machined more to the right then the left. Is this something that is normal on stg-58s, and just weird in to my mind, or is it a mistake that the austrian quality control missed ? Should I get the gunsmith who assembles the rifle to fix it? Check to see the gasblock isnt rotated on the barrel somehow. Could be your barrel is mis-timed. Otherwise sounds like the bipod cut was incorrectly machined.

BTT! Ha, take that Gary
![]() After checking my various bipod cut barrels (FN, Imbel, Steyr), the bipod cut is offset on purpose. When the bipod is used in the prone position the greater pivot travel to the right allows easier changing of the magazine. Think about it
