Brass deflector?
I got an R1 on a Coonan from Randy(aka sledgehammer) the other day. It's my first FAL. I took it to the range with some South African surplus and fired it up. I had some feeding issues on the first mag where it was trying to load another round without fully ejecting the spent case. I opened the gas post a little and was able to run off the last 10 rds of the mag with out a hitch.
I hand my buddy the second full mag. He fires one rd and it jams up. So I open the gas post a little further. He fires again and it locks up tight to where you can't retract the bolt. The bolt is not fully closed though. Anyway, after trying everything else, I lightly tapped rearward on the charging handle and it came free. Opened up the gas port another notch. Fired the rest of the mag. I realized that the rest of my SA surplus didn't make it to the range My buddy just happened to have a box of about 60 rds of some surplus .308. It has a NATO marked cross headstamp with something like L1A1 or L2A2. The ammo was night and day. The SA was noticable softer than the second ammo. Burned through the rest of the ammo with no problems. The ejecting brass did ding up the rifle pretty good just to the rear of the ejection port. Is this normal? Does someone make a brass deflector?

It is normal for the brass to do this when it ejects. If you want to protect the finish you can put some layers of tape over area to protect the receiver.
I can't remember the name of the company but there was a plastic case catcher made for the FAL. It's made the same company that makes them for the AR15, Mini-14, etc, it's black with a textured finish.

Thanks for the replies. I can't believe that no one makes a rubber bumper type setup for the FAL. I might need to post some pics to show how it's eating my receiver and top cover up. I see lots of pics of other guys FAL's and I have yet to see one that has this type damage.
