Basicly the frist 20,000 STG rifles were built in Belguim after that they were made in Austria and used a special muzzle brake that screwed on the barrel,The G1's were made in Belguim and were made for Germany and had a special slip on muzzle brake that locked on to the barrel on a lug that was made onto the barrel, other than these differences the rifles were very close to each other, same cal. same basic metal handguards and same bipods.HTH

I answered this somewhere else, too. Same Q?
(no shameful doubleposts, I'm sure!)

G-1:
The first Metric FAL.
Germans eventually got 200k, but Belgium wouldn't license Germany to produce them.
3mm lower sight plane defines most Metric silhouettes.
Metal HG.
Conformal bipod.
Accesory lug (NOT a bayonet lug) mounted to a smooth barrel muzzle. Allows use of unique slip-on FH, GL, and BFH.
First produced in 1956. Production ended in 1959.

StG-58:
Externally VERY similar to G-1.
Unique 'Stoll' combination muzzle device: FH. GL, and woire-cutter. MAJ Stoll was the Austrian project officer who spec'd the rifle for Austria.
Straight-comb nylon buttstock later, instead of the German humpback.
FN produced 20k for Autria, then Austria made thousands more at the Steyr-Daimler-uch facility.

Siblings, really, w/ very minor differences. Many consider the StG the pinnacle of FAL manufacturing and finish.
