Recomendations for a good shootin Mauser
I just posted this question on the C&R forum but this place gets more traffic.
There are Yugo's, Persians, Egyptians and a sprinkling of remarked German K-98's. I want a smooth action and an accurate rifle. The turn down bolt of the 98's is appealing too. I could kick myself for not getting a K-98 a couple years back when they were plentiful...........

I think the 6.5 x 55 Swedish mausers are the best and most pleasurable to shoot 2nd would probably be a Persian mauser

See if you can find one od these:
http://www.surplusrifle.com/mauserswedish/index.asp My CARL GUSTAV is simply amazing in it's quality. They are a bit scarce though. You could also try a VZ-24 : http://www.surplusrifle.com/brnovz24/index.asp or one of these: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Y...r_Package.html

My favorite shooters are my 7mm Mexican and 6.5x55 Swede. And the 8mm K 98s and Turk. Actually, they all shoot pretty well.

Think I'll try one of those laminated K-98's with the winter trigger guards from Classic Arms. Too bad they had the German markings removed..........

I got a swede 96 carbine that my grandpa "sporterized" in 1962. It shoots great, action is smooth, accurate as hell. 6.5x55 is EXPENSIVE!!!!!

You can check out some good 8mm guns from classic arms.
My personal preferences are the VZ-24 and origonal Gew. 98 and K98k rifles.

Those long barreled 6.6x55 Swedes can be shot pleasurably all day and darn accurate to boot. 8 mm is usually kind of harsh on recoil, but the Persian long rifles are just gorgeous and I would probably put up with the recoil if I had any room left in the safe. Next choice would be a decent 1908 Brazilian 7 mm if a nice matching one came my way for a decent price. Unfortunately, they are more expensive than most of the best Persians.

I love the rifle, and have no intention of changing anything on it but the fist time I shot it I had a "VERY" Hard time picking up the sights on my VZ-24? I find I have to pay even more attention to sight alignment with this particular rifle than my other Mausers.

My personal favorite shooting Mauser is a nice Yugo 24/47. It does have the straight bolt but it feels real good in the hands and at the shoulder, accurate and smooth action.
The Persians are nice too, but a but longish. My Swede Gustav has the long bbl and straight bolt, well balanced and pretty. The 6.5 is somewhat anemic compared to the 8mms I ve been shooting since I was old enuff to shoulder them. The short Spanish 7mm I used for deer hunting one year was pretty decent too. Heck, theyre all good... even the old Turk/German 98 frankenMauser I have. Have fun!

by far the best mausers that were being sold were the yugo M48s. the vast majority of them were brand new rifles with prestine bores, that never seen a round fired out of them, brand new wood, and excellent finish. you can't get any better then that. at the range my 48 does one inch groups at 100 yards.

If you pick up Jerry Kuhnhausen's book - "The Mauser Bolt Actions ; M91 through M98" you'll have a wealth of information in your quest........I've got some of each, almost as additive as my FAL........almost........

I have a sever love for the Nagants... That being said; you can't have a pile of Nagants without having a pile of Mausers... Out of that pile to note:
I have a Turked GEW98 which is a decent 100 yard shooter. I also have a VZ24 which has an outstangingly (sp) beautiful action and is an *excelletnt* shooter. By far, though, I have to mention a Yugo M48A w/ all matching numbers and a sewer pipe bore (compaied to the others) that that is quite likely the most accurate bolt rifle that I own (200 yards plus...) At least when I pull the trigger... I would say, by most standars, if your want a decent Mauser action to pummel with 8mm rounds with the back though of re-working; go with a Vz-24. You can destroy the barrel (if you can in your lifetime) and be left with a completely kick ass action to rebuild on. |

The rifle came with all the accessories the the Mitchell guns come with and it is very nice. However I paid quite a bit "less" than the ones that are being sold through Mitchell. That being said they are very nice guns and I guess it just depends on what you feel they are worth? At the FUNSHOW here a few months ago a guy was selling beautiful YUGO Mod-48's , and some extremely nice VC-24'S for decent prices. I had one of each so I passed but I would imagine you could find a nice MOD-48 W/Out paying the premium price that you would through Mitchell.

My Grandfather recently picked one up for me, along with all the goodies hat came with it (bayonet, pouches ect.). He was very excited about it for the rifle is supposably in amazing condition. When I asked him how much he paid for it, I nearly fell off the chair ($395.00). OUCH! My Grandfather had been heavy into collecting firearms a four-five decades ago, but had to sell of his collection to fund medical bills for a family member (thankfully, there are still a few cool specimens lost/stored way...amazing to think that German K98s were tossed/traded around like Yugo SKS's are today ). Back in the day, from what I understand, you purchased what was appealing to you, and if you thought the quality was worth the price, you bought it. The quality and presentation of the M-48 appears to be worth the $395.00 price tag in my my Grandfather's eyes, I'm very excited about coming home and checking her out!

Oh...something to consider if you are looking for a really fun little Mauser action to shoot, check out the Spanish FR-8 carbine, which is chambered in .308.
One of my favorite rifles to shoot. |

+1 on the Swedish Mausers. They are a pleasure to shoot and my least accurate Swede is more accurate than my best 98k.
Though not a Mauser, the Swiss K-31s are also great shooters and very inexpensive.
