Charging Handle Knob Removal???
My G1 kit from DS Arms came with a very nice metal charging handle already installed. It needs a little buffing though. So please, how do you get the knob off of the handle??? This is my first kit build so don't worry, the simplier the better :-)

Remove the handle from the rifle.
* Remove the handguards; * Move the handguard ring forward; * Using a 1/16" punch, tap the cocking handle lug pin from the bottom UP and out; * Pull the lug out, then slide the cocking handle forwards and off the rifle. With the cocking handle in your hand, use a proper backstop and tap the pin directly behind the knob from the bottom UP and out. This pin retains a detent pin under spring pressure; I like to tap the pin most of the way out, then press the flat of the cocking handle against a block of wood and finish removing the pin. You can then gently relax the spring tension and let the detent pin and spring fall out of the cocking handle. Now you can finally get down to business. The knob is retained by a rivet; get a large-enough drill and drill out the rivet from the back to remove the knob. Of course, you'll need a new rivet when replacing the knob; use a punch to stake it closed. Off the top of my head, DSA sells these rivets. Reassemble in reverse order. Remember to tap in your pins from the top DOWN. If you mix up the pins, the detent pin retaining pin will be the longer of the two and will have a shiny spot in the center. --Radio

Ironman. The knobs are usually riveted and would require drilling the old rivet out after first removing the plunger and spring under the knob, then replacing the rivet or using a socket screw. If you can just buff it in place with brasso, flitz etc you may be way ahead. Hermit

Hey thanks for all the replies. I had gotten the pin out along with the plunger and spring that is under the charging knob. My was full of crud! I think I will just buff the knob in place. Now I have an extra brand new plastic knob from DS Arms. You know as a matter of fact I really have and extra set of like new handguards, a like new pistol grip, plastic charging knoband, and after I refinish the wood buttstock, a nice black plastic buttstock with rubber pad! Hey, all I need is a G1 barrel assembly and a new complete lower and I've got a start on kit number 2!!! Yahoo!!

I like a #7 bit. Easy to keep centered.
