Know of any nicknames for FALs by users?
I got to thinking of the nicknames used for U.S. small arms by the troops to which they were issued. 'Pig' (M60) and 'Matty Mattel gun' (M16) come to mind. What have FALs been called by the troops that carried them? I would also be interested in hearing of other nicknames for weapons that were issued to soldiers that did not serve in the U.S. armed forces. What have you heard?

Back during the U.S. Army T48 trials in the 1950s, the T48 FAL was known by soldiers as "The Idiot Stick" due to its protrudent barrel.

I talked to an Aussie that said in his unit they called it "The Mighty Slur" as well as "Slur" and later the "Elephant Killer" after the AUG came onto the scene and they got used to that 5.56 bullshit.

I do now remember reading in a couple of books that the cut down L1A1s used by Australian Task Force SAS teams in Vietnam were called 'bitches', which I think was because of the excessive muzzle flash and blast. I also saw a photo of an M14 that was abbreviated at the barrel to the gas system block that the SAS used, and now I wonder if that would be the 'yank bitch' to the SAS troops using it.

Most common name I've heard in the RSA or Rhodesia was "FN". When someone mentioned that they meant the FAL or SLR rifle. Wasn't until I was back in the US that I started hearing FN's referred to as "FAL's" or "fawles" phonetically.

What?!?! No one named their FAL "Charlene" in honor of the M14 used by Pvt. Pyle in "Full Metal Jacket"? The shame.......
Mine is just my baby. I have thought of having "Mjolnir" (the name of Thor's Hammer) engraved on the receiver though. |

My first build, on a "South African" kit has "Vanessa IV" neatly scratched into the handguards.
Makes me wonder what happened to Vanessas I-III.

i sometimes refer to my 4 FALS as (groucho, harpo, chico, and zeppo). what i find interesting on the one imbel is the 3 upside down crosses carved into the front handguard.
sorta makes me wonder what that ones seen.

Perhaps I could name the upcoming Brit L1A1 build as 'Tommy Atkins', in honor of Kipling's everyman soldier serving in Army. How about a name for an Australian L1A1 build? How about 'Harry' (from Graham Kennedy's L1A1-carrying character in 'The Odd Angry Shot')?

But I still remember James the GPG's answer to me once when buying one of his kits as to how to explain it to my SO- One word... "jewelry" Back on topic, seems I remember one of our guys posting from Iraq saying that the locals over there referred to FALs as "NATOs".
