Brit. L1 finish
I'm in the process of completing my British L1 project and now I'm faced with dealing with the finish. I, beleave it or not, like the black gloss Brit. finish and would like to match it. What is it and who sells it? Thanks,

Hey Batman, IIRC the finish is called Suncorite, and is unavailable in the US due to the EPA. You might want to check out some of the Brownells products, their baking lacquers specifically. I know some folks have used them and been pleased with the results. If you spray it too close you will get a glossy finish, farther away will give you matte. HTH, Dan.

DSA sells a spray called "British Black" that matches very well. Be sure to bake it after applying.

Just a thought, but you may want to check into getting it finished in black oxide. Black oxide is an industrial coating that's very similiar to some gun blue, except that it's very black,.. as the name implies. It doesn't create a grainy texture as a phosphate finish will,.. it pretty much duplicates the gloss or lack or gloss on the part being black oxided. plating shops around here will do a batch quantity for $75. However, here, they won't do firearms because of some bizarre fear of getting in trouble with the feds.

Thanks all,
Dan, is the Suncorite available in Canada? I'm in Michigan right next to Ontario and it takes me about 20 minutes to get there. Mike D. I don't see the British Black on the DSA web site. Do I have to call them? Templator, I have many new Brit parts that have a great finish. I also have several parts that are in very bad shape. I want to match the new parts as best I can.

Batman,
Doubt you'll find any up here, we never used it. It is carcinogenic in liquid form so the chances of importing it are nil. I'd go with the Brownells stuff if I were you, that's what Enfield collectors mainly use to refinish or touch up. |

Batman, come summer, you get the cubans and we'll take my boat over to Crystal Bay and watch the Canadian ladies while we smoke them! LOL Seriously, I have an L1A1 finished in Metacol III black which looks really close to some original parts I have on hand. Probably will wear better too.

DSA has the paint but it is in their catalog, not on the web. Call them to order.
