although ammo is still a bit pricy, ya might want to consider one of the .17's The 917v is kinda chincy construction wise but mine still shoots pretty good.

All my other .22 rifles sit in the safe while I shoot my Romanian M69 as first choice. Used it tonight on a possum and it is damn accurate. For $69, it has been the best .22 purchase I have ever made.

Look real hard at the CZ series. I did some research a couple of months ago on the same type of rifle and these are what I found to the the most gun for the best price.
I wish the new Remington was cheaper but it's not. Rob

Get a Ruger 10/22. Lots of parts out there and you can build it however you want .

I had a Marlin bolt .22lr, and also knew others who did. A friend of mine (who had one) and I tried grouping them one day (actually shooting paper!). We used all kinds of ammo, the guns were lousy. You'd be better off finding an older Remington or Winchester. The old ones will outshoot that micro-groove crap anyday.

I have an old Russian CM-2. I saw EAA was selling them recently. I don't know the EAA price. I gave about $250 for mine. It has a date of 1952, and the old guy selling off stuff at the gunshow said it was an Olympic "prone" rifle. Stock looks a lot like the Anshutz prone rifles.
Single shot bolt action, heavy freefloat barrel, infinitely adjustable trigger. Even when I set it lighter than the 2-OZ 40X trigger I had, it still breaks cleanly. With CCI greenlabel it will put every shot through a tiny ragged hole at 25 yards. I like it. Dave

i have several 22's right now, but the model 60 semi auto (my favorite) and the old single shots, along with the mossberg model 35 (?) are not suitable for what i want to do as a little quiet project...
i am looking for a bolt action, clip fed, hb .22...for subsonics....so the attachtment doesnt look so bulky on the end... gonna get one so i might as well get 2... a semi like a ruger 10/22 makes too much action noise.. |

We could never get those Marlins to group better than an inch or an inch and a half at about 20yds.
Unfortunately, the BSA is all but gone and along with them went the accurate and cheap .22s. One that will really shoot like a Remmy will cost more like $400 brand new these days. The CZ always looked interesting, but I've never shot one. |

Ruger 10/22, secondhand(or third). Get a target (.920 diameter) barrel of your choosing. Hog out the factory stock for the barrel and you are good to go. You would lose the barrel band and forward of the stock from it if that bothers you. There are tons of aftermarket stocks to work with those barrels that aren't all that expensive. With decent ammo, almost any of the heavy barrels will shoot better than the average shooter could hope to. Factory triggers suck, but those are easily replaced or upgraded. Lots of scope mounst available.

I own several 22's and still go back to my Mossberg US M44. It's a US military trainer from WWII that has good sights. Fun to shoot old military stuff. Most can be found at Gun Shows for a couple hundred bucks for a very good one. I have two, one is new in the wrapper. Saving it for one of my grand kids. For a bit more money look for an old Winchester 52. Have fun.

A Remington 52-D would fill the bill for sure. They are at virtually every gun show, last forever and will probably increase rather than decrease with time. Opt for one with Williams micro rear and you have a true tack driver. I've seen them all over the board in price. Back in 2003 the CMP was selling them as well. Might want to see if they have anything else headed their way.

well if it has to be a cheap, HB, clip fed, 22lr, and bolt action the only thing I can think of is the $150 tula that aim is selling. The barrel is more medium weight than heavy but it is free floated and a scope rail is included. They have a pretty good rep as far as accuracy goes but I can't say for sure as I don't have one.
A model 52 (winchester - I don't know bout the remmy) would be awesome but I don't think you'll find too many around for $250. Consider an air rifle, they work great and can be quite powerful once you start spending in the 200 range......but I guess that is no good for the clip fed requirement. So what you got squirrel problems or sum-ting?

I know you said bolt, but how about a Ruger 96-22 lever? Mine has a Norrel intergal suppressor on it.

I've seen suppressed Ruger 10/22s advertised. They look like heavy barrel guns. The same folks probably do 77/22s, but I don't remember having seen one. I'm wondering if you used sub-sonic ammo in a heavy and/or long barreled bolt action .22 if you even need a suppressor.

I don't really know how accurate my 96-22 is. It's deadly on clay pigeons on the berm at about 25 yards. Apperance wise, it looks like a target barrel. But it's all suppressor. IIRC, Norrel charged $385 to do it. He's the only one that would do the 96-22. Several other people will do the bolt guns. I opted for the lever as I'm left handed.
Might be wrong, but I don't think you're going to get a barrel that's as large a diameter as a suppressor. A shooting buddy has a bunch of screw on cans, but I haven't paid much attention to the size. In response to questions, he's posted pics of some of them at http://subguns.com/boards/mgmsg.cgi If you go there looking for the pics, do a search for messages posted by "Toad" |

bykerhd - depends on how quiet you want it. I can't quantify the difference, but someone at http://subguns.com/boards/mgmsg.cgi probably has the numbers.
I've also got a full auto integrally suppressed 10-22. THe loudest thing on it is the bolt reciprocating. That's why I have the other one. |
