I've changed my Bug out plans
As the population grows, finding a suitable spot to avoid even short duration issues is fast becoming almost impossible. As I was fishing the other day the idea to use my boat for a Bug out vehicle occured to me. We have a 35,000 acre lake within 20 miles of my AO that has literally hundreds of islands in sizes from a half acre up to possibly 15 acres or more. One of these islands might well be the perfect location. Open field of view, ability to obtain food using simple drop lines, water in abundance, etc. Hiding my boat would not be too difficult, with the motor removed, two people could probably drag it out of the water and conceal it with brush. What do you think?

Anything you do to put a barrier between you and them is better.
Rubber type blow up type rafts are handi to have stored too. They make them in all sizes. (one man, two man, 4-man) and they store in a tiny box. I have a small river running behind my "shack in the woods" I can use to travel on if neccessary. I would feel like a sitting duck, though. Good idea you have, there. I think.

check out inflatable life boats -- most have the ripcord CO2 inflation. you'd need a outboard mount tho..... good idea! plus you will have a water supply, except it could be contaminated --- dig a well?

I would suggest trying to spend a three day weekend on one of those islands in January. That will tell you just how feasable it is. And attempt to feed yourself off of fish at the time. While you might be able to transport some much desired paraphenalia to the island, try to make do with the bare minimum to get an idea of what it would be like for a (?) couple month duration.

Seems like a neat idea. Just remember, if you ARE spotted by the "bad guys" ( whatever type they may be) it's going to be hard to defend yourself unless you're a fair sized group there. You can't stay awake forever, nor can you cover every possible landing area even on a small island. Just a thought ( and not an original one at that

Bug IN.
Stand fast. well...unless its New Orleans, and the roof is underwater. I'd rather expire in my house than on some godforsaken island on a lake.

Boat for Bug Out?
I think you'll be highly visible in a boat on a lake, but if you can get round that (run at night without lights?) then it may be a good idea.
Remember the best place to hide a tree is in a forest! One car among a bunch is kind of inconspicuous. Unless its a bannana yellow Lamborghini! Shape. Shine. Shilouette. Shadow. Sound. Beat those 5 & you're home free.

Think about a gill net for your bug out bag. We had them in USAF survival kits.
Dad let us try them out as kids, cought a lot of bullheads. Weight is almost nothing.

No fires, though. The smoke would be seen for miles.

If you do go to one of these islands find one with decent high ground and as little cover/concealment around the shore as possible. This will be your KILL ZONE of last resort. When you travel go at night .But other boats can have radar so sneaking by at night can be tricky in a boat with any size to it. Choose rifles that can use the high ground to your maximum effect and there is no cover on the water so don't let bad guys land on the island. Practice Bugging out to your island in diffrent seasons. You may find out that fog, bugs, snakes ect are an issue.

If your living in a place, that you think is not worth defending, move.
Are you there because the job is there? You'll take the money, but run when it gets tough? Stand and fight, protect your job and your nieghborhood. Just a thought.

go there on a holiday weekend and see how many of the islands have people camping on them..
there is a place like that where my brother lives, he says if you dont get there early on friday morning all the good islands are taken. start keeping notes on which islands are regullary camped on . go to the other ones and look for a place to put a bucket cache in place on it.

The BOB thing sounds romantic, but I have my doubts as to it's practicality in a pending disaster situation other than assembling those personal items necessary if you have to move into a shelter.
An island? Unless the island is Tahiti, then no thanks partner! My home is the best prepared location. Not some BOB stuffed with minimal gear and having to trudge around hoping no one sees me. You know whats a lot better than "bug out" plans and "bug out bags"? Friends! Establish yourself in your community and make lots of friends. Join a volunteer emergnecy response organization. Not only could they probably use the help, but it provides a cover for you in times of trouble. You are not viewed as some whacko or as a danger that must be delt with like you might be slinking around in the woods, or on some island in the middle of a man-made lake. You are viewed as an emergency response professional - a value to your community - and that in itself provides you and your family protection. Please don't anyone take offense. But, come on....its easy to get drawn in to that Rambo - take no prisoners - self-destructive thinking. Survival means obtaining help, and having that help available means being a part of something, not out alone on the fringes. That only makes you a target! |

Well, one fact ot come out of New Orleans is that staying at home (on dry ground) and working together with armed neighbors WILL work. For you and the neighborhood. That is until "Da Goobermint" comes to help.
I have so many thoughts, points and questions... I'll post them soon, after I can organize them in my mind.
