hi, i'm old here and have a sickness

why can't i stop buying guns ??
after seeing id's galil, i think i may now have to find a way of getting one..
i am still going to get serious about a 223 fal in december, but "we" have a plan..

may start looking for a "g" series, and maybe another 50.63....a rogak standard...well, wishful thinking of finding another one of those again....

oh,, so many cool toys out there and only so much time...

and i still want a bunch of hunting guns too..
a marlin 45-70, maybe a lazzaroni, a custom something or other....

help !

what can i do to stop ? my safe is too full plus over a dozen now unsafed...thought about a new bigger one,and selling the smaller one, but heck i think i just might get a bigger one, and bolt the 2 together...let's see someone move over a ton outta the house..

who else has this sickness, i think i am like a junkie or gambler or boozer or womenizer,,,etc........but with guns....

and damn i don't even shoot half the stuff i own anymore....

I've been trying to preserve my dad's collection for several years and I've decided to give in in a way. I've grown tired of moving so many guns that I won't shoot for collectors sake. There are several that I want to buy that I can shoot and have fun with and buy parts for too. I'll be selling in a couple of months (most with their original boxes) an AR-70, AR-100, Norinco Legend, Clayco AKS under folder (uncomfortable to shoot), Steyr AUG (selling to buy FS2000 hopefully). There may be more, Galil ARM unless I buy some parts and start shooting it, it has only 40 rounds through it now since new.

Either way though I'll still have the same number of guns so I'll have to buy a second safe too. CRAP! I need a beer now! Splatt, I think we need Dr. Phil's help.

I know what ya mean! I've got to buy another safe soon; and, there's no end in sight. Hell, the ammo alone is about to take over my study. Do we need help? Nah, just more money and room, and time!

Glen (187) made a factual statement to me, collecting firearms is worse then a crack cocaine addition........problem is I just don't collect a lot of one kind of firearm like FALs, but any military style firearms........single shot, bolt action, semi auto, belt fed.........only have 2 types of belt fed, 1919 and a RPD

Splatt, I could have written your post myself, except you have to triple it. I have three safes jammed full and about 12 or 15 unsafed, at least four others at my son's house and one south of town at the smith getting stocked. And I just ordered another. Think of the fun I will have sometime in the near future when I move all them to Idaho. I don't even want to think about moving all the ammo, brass, bullets, primer and powder, and about half a ton of casting lead. I'll need a semi truck. But boy do I have fun.

Hey, check these guys out! http://smithsecuritysafes.com/n_contact.html
They will build custom size safe/vault doors so you can make a room or closet into a safe room and you'll then have all the room you need!

You'll just need to line the walls with something.

Gentlemen,
You have it all wrong! If it were a sickness, drug, booze or women, you would wake up the next morning weak, strung out, hung over, tired, a guilty conscience and BROKE! Nothing to show for your obsession except for a blurred memory. Now in our case, we still wake up broke, but we have so much to show for our spent money, no, let me restate that, our INVESTED money. The value of your collection can only go up, and while you can say the same thing about a fine painting or other piece of art, the FUN factor is not there. The utility factor is not there either. The nice painting will not put food on the table or protect your family after the catastrophe. You are also curators of pieces of history, battle rifles that have been used by men to alter the course of history, used to protect our country and save lives. They may also be a reminder of tyrany out of control, opression and deaths of millions, a reminder that we must forever be watchful.
So it is neither a sickness or a drug, just a smart way of investing money. A buddy of mine had a problem selling this concept to his wife, untill he put a small price sticker on every gun in the safe, so that Wifey would know exactly how much to sell the guns for after his demise, this way she would not get ripped off by unscrupulous buyers. Imediatley she saw the benefits of his hobby, and seeing as he was spending money on her and her childrens inheritance, all resistance crumbled.
Like in all things PERCEPTION is key. If you percieve that you have an addiction or a desease, you will seek help. You will fight against the problem, even though it still controls you and you will feel guilty that you are maybe not doing enough to get well. On the other hand, if you percieve that you are an investor, you will seek ADVICE, you will not feel guilty about spending money, you will revell in finding "DEALS", you will hunt for bargains at the gun show or in Shotgun News, adding to your portfolio of fine works of engineering and art. Ocasionally you might sell one of the "Investments" at a proffit, amidst a great fanfare of how much money you made on the deal. This helps to keep the illusion going as to what a smart trader you are and how much money is to be made investing in guns. Now SMART investors need to be INFORMED investors, so the endless stream of gun magazines in the mailbox and the books you get from Palledin Press are RESEARCH TOOLS, indespensible to keeping you informed about the value of your investment. Keep your wife informed about how the portfolio is doing...Current news events like "MMmm Honey, they have just banned the importation of surplus barrels, that should make the 27 FAL kits in the spare room worth DOUBLE what I paid for them, wasn't that a GREAT deal?" Your investment also needs to be protected, so gun safes are mandatory. They also need constant cleaning and test firing to maintain their value. Kits need to be assembled, as this increases their value substantially.
Hours spent reading the Fal Files is absolutely critical, how else would you know about the impending release of Dans kits and the investment potential thereof? One also has to be quick to scoop up the bargains in the market place, all these great investments have to be grabbed before another investor steals them away from you.

I've begun working more OT, just to put more money aside to buy more guns.

It's a vicious cycle, buy a gun, work more hours, build up the bank account, buy another gun, work more hours, build up the account, buy another gun...

I keep telling myself, "You don't need that, you already have...", but it doesn't help.

Forget Dr. Phil, call Ditech, and get a home equity loan to buy more guns.

Besides, I doubt Dr. Phil could help, we would end up assimilating him, and before we know it, the person we sought out for counseling is not only as addicted as we are, but goes into a buying frenzy in an attempt to catch up.

My name is Dr. X...and I'm a FALaholic. I didn't start out this way. FALs were only a pipe dream for me in the 80's. I'd see them in SOF alot and dreamed of the day...Now I have my own and I have gone through this weird funk (kinda the way I did when I finally bought a Hi-Power, pistol wise) I have the gun I've wanted all my life and now don't know what to do with myself. AK's & AR's no longer interest me, if anything I want more FAL's...(at least an Inch model!) Lord help me, I have graduated from military rifle whore to the hard stuff...

As ever,
Dr. X

PS-I only have one now but you just wait til those new kits start comin' in, THEN you'll see...Play catch up is right...

Find neat rifle. But it. Decide spares are needed. Buy them. buy so many that pretty soon there's enough for a whole rifle. Build it. Now more spares are needed. Can't buy them because Splat kept tempting me with HIS wonderful toys. Trick girlfriend into trying shooting, figuring it's an extra source of gun income. Mistake ! She uses hormonal influences to adopt MY toys. More rifles required.......................................... ............................................ARRRGG GGHH !
It hurts so good
Don't worry, Splat, I haven't let her NEAR the 50.63

The great thing about this addiction is the fact that you don't have to lose any money in it if you watch what you are doing. Make informed purchases and hold on to them long enough to get some appreciation in the value. As the number of guns you have increases it stands to reason that you are holding them longer and longer so their appreciation must be growing well beyond what that same amount of cash stuck in a piddly savings account would have given you.

You could have put the money into stocks or bonds - but the profit (or loss!) you would have made on those investments would depend on how well you know those markets and how well you followed them and acted on your knowledge. My assumption (correct me if I am wrong here) is that you probably don't know those markets anywhere as well as you understand the gun market. So stick with what you know.

If you want to test this theory sit down and open up a new Excel spreadsheet. List up all the guns you have and put down the prices you paid for them as well as the date when you bought them. Now put down what you would estimate the fair value is in today's market. A quick calculation can show you what your investment is worth and how much it has appreciated.

Maybe you should see if you can get a better deal buying two safes at once. Call the manufacturer and find out if they can give you a discount. It's a sure thing that the delivery charges per safe will be cheaper if you have two delivered at the same time.

I too am a Gunaholic. When I buy a new gun, it's like a heroin junkie stickin' a needle in his arm. Only, I don't pass out on the floor and drool. Well, yeah, a lot of times, there is some drooling, but it's good. Sometimes buying accessories and cases of ammo gives me the same feeling.

The excitement is in the chase, not the kill.

Maybe we can work something out. I want a G. You want the excitement of finding one at the right price (face it, after that you'd get bored of it, just like the poyer).

So waddaya say, go find me a G Series, preferably sear cut?

If you would have only spoken up earlier I could have let you know about two of the rifles on that list: G-Series and Rogak Standard. Unfortunately, I don't believe they are both still available.

OH !a second rogak standard has surfaced !!
guess they went to virginia too....

abominog,
i missed the poyer so i bought another...
now to replace the others ...

with only 50 rogak standards in existance, i think that will be the hardest..

g's are fairly common with over 1800 imported, that may be low on the list of next in line to get's...

got enough ammo for a bit so that's not an issue, other than maybe some 762x39...

just new and exiciting toys..

oh well, gotta make more money or sell plasma to support the addiction..

Splat, your problem can be fixed. After you led me astray with LEO AR's from Colt last Fall I've been trying to figure how to properly repay you. It seems that now may be the time. Recognizing your problem is the first step in the healing process..

You need to have a really bad experience with your toys. Like selling them at a huge loss. Leaves a bad taste for years. I just don't know if you're ready to do that yet, or if you're strong enough. But if you are, I'll just bet your fellow falfilers will sacrifice and try to help heal you.

All the best and good luck.
