Got my spring kit yesterday and should get my gas tube in the next day or so.

Time for some Scotch and SAR surgery, eh.

Got another reply from Springfield:

So, is there a difference in the MFG date vs the Import date???

If most of our SARs were made in 1985 then were they imported or sold at later dates?

Reply:
There is no difference between the manufacture date and the import date.
They shipped out within 3 days of delivery and did not stay in inventory for any length of time.

So, this isn't making sense..... Most were manufactured/Imported from 10/85 to 12/85 but have the Post Ban SAR-4800 features that were only sold after 1989???????

I guess I'll wait awhile and just send this to the Generic Springfield Customer support email.

ALBPM,

It must be abundantly clear by now that Teresa does not understand what she is telling you? Each of her statements contradicts the next. The bottom line is the SAR-4800 was not created until after the 1989 ban was enacted. Why would Springfield manufacturer post ban rifles 4 years before the ban existed?

I agree.....

Well, maybe we can get a few more complete serial numbers for the rifles on our list and send it off again. I have one more contact at Springfield I can try.

Ok, I will go over it again

1. Those 198x dates are wrong, bogus, incorrect, false etc.
2. Reread my previous posts, whatever your info is from internet sources like Janes, et al they are also wrong on the MD series. Like I said before, I scanned back in the late 90s a magazine article on the history of the Imbel MD series and distributed it on the old Falfiles and the MD series was not even in production until 1989.
3. All of you are going over previous well travelled history, please notice the date of my letter from SA. DK and possibly other members may have even older letters.
Sorry for the poor quality of the scan but its been awhile since I used it.

We figured the info I got was incorrect since the mfg dates were mostly 1985 for SARs that were all Post ban SAR-4800s .

bringing this up from the depths for more and new info..

mine is serial number sa sr158x marked geneseo, il., but not sure if marked springfield inc. or armory....

it has the fake looking ar 15 muzzle dingus..... anyone know if this type muzzle dingus has the threads under it ?

mine is as new in box with a warranty card and sar4800 manual, but it for the 308 model...was there a manual specific to the 223 model ??
or did they just use the 308 one ???

i will know in a few weeks if the bolt is polished or not, and spring length.

so lets get this thread rolling again with any new info available..

Splatt

There were two different manuals shipped with the SAR-4800 that I am aware of. I don't believe Springfield ever published one that was 5.56mm specific. Below are the covers from the two I am aware of.

Regarding the fake AR-15 flash suppressor, all of my SAR-4800's had the early thread protector. I believe the fake AR-15 flash suppressors were installed on the later rifles and my not be threaded.

Here is a picture of two early thread protectors I removed from my rifles.

the manual looks like the top one..

i think it's of the second run of imports and does not have a threaded muzzle...
i am hoping that the od diameter is still large enough to have it threaded for a combo device, if not then i am going to have to bite it and put a phantom on..

i think that should still look alright..

ok LET me get it straight. I purchased sar 48 Jan- Feb 1989 thru my dealer from springfield armory. Boy was I pissed when I got a 4800 308. Called SP and got customer service. They told me to send about $160 for acurrizing kit. I was not happy as I figured they were just raising the price. In May I got the money together and tried to order. ATF had send a letter and they could not sell the kit.
I will dig out my .223 sar 4800 and give you the serial number tomorrow. Has anybody taken the m16 fake flashhider off that has no screw? I sure would like a real flashider on it just for looks. It already has the US parts, DSA lightweight lower, penquin furniture and tapco parts.

Run a bunch of steel cased ammo and it may start working.

What do you mean? Is there a problem with these guns? I know some of the early ones had issues but I thought they were worked out by the time they got to the 13xx's

There were some issues with the first two lots sold by Roger at R-Guns (Sports R Us) for 975.00, but yours was from the later lots sold by CDNN for 749.95.

Thanks Safetyagentman. I had already taken it apart to check for defects and was heading to the range! I think I will postpone the range trip until tomorrow since there is snow on the ground.

Upon VERY close examination, I was able to locate two tiny slits in the buttplate of my gun. I will be drilling there for screws later on. I would have never found them if you hadn't told me they were there.

Don't drill, just insert a Philips head screwdriver into the slits and feel around for the screw heads. Make sure you apply downward pressure so the screwdriver tip does not slip out of the screw head.
