L1A1: Trilux or Varmint Scope?
OK, I'm wanting to set up my L1A1 (OK, it's REALLY a R1A1 but I'm in denial!) for medium range work. I've got an AK that I built up for short range work so I had hoped to build something for more precision at medium range work (300-600). Anything further and I'll grab my Savage 10FP!
So, now that I've rambled, back to the question: Trilux or varmint scope? I have an ARMS mount so I can use either. I also have a Tasco varmint scope that's just sitting around not doing anything (2.5-10X44) with AO and mil-dot. Would this be overkill? I like the looks of the Trilux & it IS the traditional choice but want to wring the last ounce of usable accuracy out of the rifle. Is the 4x Trilux about right for the accuracy potential or would the varmint scope really do more? TIA, Mike |

I wouldn't expect that tasco to survive on a fal, or any large caliber for that matter. YMMV

Hey Mike!
I've BTDT. The TriLux SUIT is for rapid acquisition, faster follow-ups and *reasonable* magnification in steady-rest/longer range shooting. In my opinion, and that of many others, the SUIT is NOT a scope, per se, for long range shooting; It is an implement to accurize combat-type shooting. While the SUIT that I have is reasonably accurate; the pointer does not lend itself well to varmint plugging shots...at any range. I also have tried a std. scope on the L1A1...a Tasco 3-9X40. WOrked well enough out to visible ranges. Unless you have one of Vandenberg's sub-MOA units (or eqivalent), stick w/the irons! Practice! The way is in the training. I know some pretty fair shooters that can, and DO, whack the gongs out to 600 m. w/irons. I also know some fellas that can't hit a bull in a barnyard w/a scope . I keep the SUIT as a nifty accessory, a piece of history, and occasional use. The scope is on another rifle, as I can do 2 MOA or so (w/the proper ammo) /irons..and my old eyes are really goofy! ![]() HTH, Paul

Thanks for the input guys. Actually Ryan, I've been very fortunate with Tasco scopes. I bought two of these scopes a while back and have had no issues with the other one. It's been on a .338 for a short while, a .30-06 for (edited, I was reminded that there's been two scopes for the 750+ round count - sorry) 325+ rounds and is now on my .308. Still right on. Maybe they forgot to break this one from the factory! (some of them ARE quite bad)
As to the iron sights, they probably work just fine but I'm used to having glass on serious weapons. Bad habit maybe. Is there another rear sight you would recommend Deltaten? It seems odd to me having a set peep size for all yardages. Thanks again, Mike Last edited by m39fan; August 18, 2005 at 20:45. |

I've had my share of cheap scopes too. Usually they hold up recoil wise. However, I have never had a cheap scope that had consistent adjustments. Usually it's laughable where I would test 2 MOA right and then go back 2 MOA to what should be "center" only to end up 10 MOA off or something rediculous. May you have better luck with cheap scopes than I have. I've learned my lesson... I think
